During the last two centuries in the wider Balkan region a wide variety of Serbian public monuments and memorials were raised. Different by their form and function, they show the status of culture of memory that induced their typological stratification Except for the chronology of creation, they can be classified according to their structure, themes, style and urban and natural landscape position. In terms of structure they are divided into monuments with primary sculptural and figurative character, those with prevailing architectural structure, and the third group that combines elements of both artistic disciplines. In terms of themes, monuments of a personal type prevail while others emphasize the crucial historical events, collective ideas and sacrifices. Their design simultaneously accompanied the development of styles in modern ( recent) Serbian art.en
