The Florentine Tondo depicting Adoration of Christ from the collection of the National Museum in Belgrade – ascribed to Lorenzo di Credi (ca 1459–1537), his workshop or a
follower of his – in terms of its theme, format and morphology, delineates one of the main
trends of the artistic production of the late 15 and the early 16th century in Florence. The
theme of Adoration (adoratio) of infant Christ and the circular format of the painting were
often combined in works intended for private spaces to be used for prayer. The well-known
Verrocchio-Credi-type of iconographic model of this theme made its round of the painting
workshops of the city owing to the practice of reproducing original models. The picture preserved in Belgrade, even though it is quattrocento in terms of its concept, stands out on account of its painterly achievement from among the many epigonic clichéd and “serial-type”
products dating from the early 16th century, created in the footsteps of Di Credi’s aesthetics.... The Belgrade Adoration, a work of high painterly value, is a creation of a markedly talented follower of Di Credi from among those belonging to a narrow circle gathered around
the artist (closest, in stylistic terms, to works of Tomaso, Il Maestro della Conversazione di
Santo Spirito). Proceeding from the hypothesis that the work being preserved in the National Museum was originally intended for a private religious experience, this paper interprets
the tondo as a typical, standard model of a devotional picture that represented a focal point
of religious contemplation and everyday prayers of a Florentine family from the early New
Age. As a witness to and a product of private laicist worship, which placed emphasis on the
physical and emotional aspects of religion, the Belgrade tondo served as a powerful and effective material and visual stimulus in the course of a prayer. Through its intimate and close
iconography and a markedly sentimental tone, the image enabled a more direct contact between religion and the observer. The establishment of a close connection and sensual, bodily communication facilitated the believer’s empathic identification with and emulation of
holy persons (Imitatio Mariae).
