| sr |
dc.description.abstract | The collective memory of mankind has stored the World War I memorizing it as a topos of the negation of humanity. The destruction and dehumanization marked an anti-civilization narrative indicating a pessimistic vision of the fallen humanity. The identitarian character of the nineteenth century man has spawned war themes among Serbian painters at the territory of Austro – Hungarian Empire during the World War I. The spirit of melancholy and pessimism has coexisted with increasing levels of devastation and self-destruction, expressed in the militarization of society. The structural stacking of layers of human consciousness – an aggressive impulse for dissolution and a pessimistic perception of self and the world – has also been visualized in the war images of several Serbian painters. Despite the differences in artistic media and personal preferences, the three artists of different generations, Uros Predic, Stevan Aleksic and Petar Dobrovic, have presented in their paintings the universal magnitudes of war disasters. By displaying human destructions, without taking an extreme ethnic or ideological standpoint, they were visualizing the state of shock that was undoubtedly surpassing the different particularities. Whether or not they had to escape from the reality, or it was needed to be abstracted, they have exceeded the planned reportage character of war scenes, creating by the artistic means an impression of spatial and temporal authenticity. A unique antiwar message, with pathos of despair and melancholy, has united them in one discourse, with final idea of presenting the inevitability of war destruction. | sr |
