Funerary practices of the communities of the late phase of the
Middle Bronze Age and the initial phase of the Late Bronze Age in Western
Serbia have been studied for more than a century. Due to the fact, level of
general knowledge about the way how the people from the past dealt with death
and their deceased is not low. However, there are a lot of specificities in the
material record that deserve our special attention. The practice of putting spindle
whorls in graves is one of them. A brief overview of the necropolises in the
region resulted in very few grave units comprising a spindle whorl.
Consequently it cannot be concluded that it was a widespread habit. Having in
mind infrequency of graves with spindle whorls in grave inventory,
interpretation of particular cases should be sought on individual level.
