The paper presents a historico-anthropological case-study of an episode from
Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq’s Turkish letters through three analytical categories –
ethics, aesthetics and erotism - proposed by Edward Said in his seminal study
Orientalism as constructive pillars of the image of the decadent Orient. Particular
scene which focuses on the Turkish hammam and the customs of the Turkish women was read against diachronic dichotomization between the East and the West,
which was a dominant discourse of political morals in the Roman Mediterranean
world. The first chapter “Mediterranean continuities: Bath as a symbol of Roman and Mediterranean civitas” analyses the connection between the Roman
culture of bathing and the concept of the ideal Roman citizen, bringing into focus the bathing as an inseparable tenet of the Roman identity. The second chapter
“East and the decadence – establishment of the moral geography of the Mediterranean”, traces the roots of Western hegemony over E...ast back to the antiquity
by stressing the aspect of the Roman politics of immorality and the place of eroticism and bathing in the discourse about the decadent East. The third chapter “Hamams and erotism – spatial metaforization” brings into the fore Busbecq’s episode and discusses the continuation of the social dynamics in the Mediterranean
culture of bathing as well as continuities of the cultural symbolical communication between the West and the East on the decadent customs of Oriental bathing.
The fourth chapter “Gendering of the hammams – one female view” provides
an episode of the Turkish hammam from the perspective of female traveler, which stresses the aspect of male European voyeuristic fantasies about the discursively constructed East as a decadent oriental woman. The conclusion of this historico-anthropological reading of the culture of bathing in the Mediterranean world
from Roman to Ottoman times, focuses on the continuities of the Mediterranean everyday life and the constructed and imagined decadent East in the eyes of European travelers, which constantly reiterated the Roman politics of immorality in
their construction of the cultural and moral superiority of the West.
