| sr |
dc.description.abstract | The Bishop’s sceptre represented in the Metropolitanate of Karlovci a sign of the highiest spiritual authority and the sign that bishop is the head of the spiritual flock (ill. 1–8). Serbian church dignitaries, patriarchs as well as bishops, were regularly shown with sceptres on their representative portraits (ill. 1–8). The Bishop’s Palace in Vršac, built by Jovan Georgijević, as Bishop of Vršac (1749–1769), keeps in its treasury several representative examples of the sceptres, which belonged to the eminent church figures from the recent Serbian history. Accordingly, they also wear particularly lavish ornaments. The sceptre of Josif Jovanović Šakabenta, a cousin of the Serbian Patriarch Arsenije IV Jovanović Šakabenta (1739–1749), the bishop of the Serbian Eparchy of Slavonia and Pakrac (1781–1784), the Bishop of Serbian Eparchy of Bačka (1784–1786) and later the bishop of Serbian Or thodox Eparchy of Vršac (1786–1805), is especially representative (1783; ill. 6a–6c). Due to his abilities and endeavors, the bishop left a significant trace in the life of the Serbian Church, as well as in the spiritual, artistic, cultural and educational life of Serbia of his own time. His sceptre, executed in ivory, has a sphere and a cross on the top, while below the crown and the sphere there are two symmetrical and heraldically arranged large snakes with opened mouths of teeth. The Resurrection of Christ is shown on the averse of the head of the sceptre, and the coat of arms of the Eparchy of Slavonia and Pakrac as well as the coat of arms of the Jovanović Šakabenta family are shown on the reverse. The tradition in depicting of the mentioned motifs represented on the sceptre, namely of the Resurrection of Christ, the serpents in pair, the cross and the sphere is dealt with in the paper, both individually and within the conceptual ideas of the sceptres. The final aim of the paper is the research that brings to light the reasons for their appearance on the sceptre ornaments, that is, that points out to their meaning. | sr |
