Иконографско решење и симболичка контекстуализација фреске Исцељења раслабљеног у бањи Витезди у католикону манастира Светог Прохора Пчињског (1488/1489)

Abstract

Тема овог рада је фреска "Исцељења раслабљеног у бањи Витезди" (сл. 2, 3) у католикону манастира Светог Прохора Пчињског (сл. 1). Насликана у време обнове манастира под краљем Милутином око 1315. године, она је, као и живопис храма у целини, пресликана крајем XV века (1488/1489). Фреска се данас налази у оквиру олтара, а у време обнове под краљем Милутином око 1315. године представљала је прву сцену јужног зида наоса до олтарске преграде (сл.2, 3). У раду је примећено да се фреска налази над улазом у просторију са гробом Светог Прохора Пчињског и да у складу са својим местом у сликаном програму храма носи снажну васкрсну односно фунерарну и есхатолошку симболику.

This paper deals with the fresco of the Healing of the Paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda (fig. 2) in the church of Saint Prochorus of Pčinja (fig. 1) – its iconography and meaning, especially in regard to its position next to the relics of Venerable Prohorus of Pčinja (fig. 3). In this sense, the fresco is seen as the intergral element of the holy cult of Saint Prochorus of Pčinja, whose focus are the relics of the Venerable Saint. The fresco was depicted at the time of the monastery’s renoval under the Serbian king Milutin, around 1315, and later, it was repainted at the end of the 15th century (1488/1489). Today the fresco is located on the south wall of the altar area, unlike the time of king Milutin, when it was located on the south wall of the naos of the church next to the iconostasis. In this paper it is noted that the fresco featuring the Healing of the Paralytic is positioned immediately above the entrance to the area containing the relics of Saint Prochorus of Pčinja and that they were once, with most probability, placed in the arched niche of “arcosolium” below this scene. In regard to this observation, it is concluded that the fresco, thus, bears strong funerary and eschatological symbolism. Analogies from the early Christian art, and Late Medieval Art, especially the Salerno Ivories and the fresco from the Hilandar Monastery, offered in the paper, show that this scene in fact represents an allusion to Salvation and more precisely to Resurrection (fig. 4, 5). Such an explanation of the meaning of the scene is also given by Christian authors.
