| sr |
dc.description.abstract | The first centuries of the Christian cult of relics were marked by dynamic development. The foundation of this cult was the discovery and transmission of holy relics, which for Christians, increasingly focused on the sensory and material experience of holiness, represented fragments of holy matter on earth. These relics, the sacred remains of martyrs and ascetics, served as a base for Christians to create the new social order. The relics also attracted the attention of devout Christians with their spectacular properties, conveyed through their various miracles. In addition to miraculous healings and exorcisms, holy relics also influenced the change of funerary customs since it was assumed that burying the dead ad sanctos would impact life post mortem. It goes without saying that these miracles often had a programmatic character and that Christian leaders, usually the most prominent city bishops, used them to emphasize their prerogatives or to defeat heretic rivals. Although the majority of Christians generally accepted the cult of relics, there were also suppressed voices of resistance. Due to the lack of sources, we only know the revealing case of Vigilantius from Calagurris. | sr |
