Траума и уметност: сећање на погром у Мачви 1914. године

Abstract

По избијању Великог рата, аустроугарски војници су почини- ли низ злочина на територији града Шапца и Мачве. Стрељања, вешања, држање талаца у шабачкој цркви и њено разарањe, постали су у локалној заједници део живог предања о ратним зверствима и искупитељској жртви невиних. Истовремено, снага вербалне историје је с временом надишла лич- на сећања, постајући колективно сведочанство о страдањима током Великог рата. Колонијални, расни и хегемонијски наступ окупаторске војске пре- растао је у званични наратив о непријатељском другом, који је дефинисао званичну политику Краљевине Југославије. О мачванском погрому 1914. године посредно и непосредно сведоче представе Стевана Чалића, Алек- сандра Дерока, Петра Добровића и Милића од Мачве, које у деценијама по завршетку Великог рата представљају визуелну оставштину о страхотама у Шапцу. Тако је мачвански погром коначно постао место сећања српске и југословенске заједнице, на основу којег је, између историје и сећања, него- вана меморија на ратну трауму 1914. године.

Traumatic reactions to extraordinary circumstances are particularly bound to war periods. Destruction, devastation, and other consequences of dehumanisation in war induce personal and collective memories of traumatic events. Several images made during World War I and in the decades after its end represent a visual testimony to the war trauma related to the 1914 pogrom in the Mačva Region. Right at the outbreak of World War I, the Austro-Hungarian armed forces committed a series of crimes on the territory of Šabac and in the Mačva Region. Traumatic events reflected in numerous shootings, hangings, and hostage-taking in the Šabac church and its destruction have become part of a living tradition within the local community. They rhetorically reveal the horrors of war and materialise the idea of the atoning sacrifice of the innocent. The artworks of Stevan Čalić, Aleksandar Deroko, Petar Dobrović, and Milić of Mačva are direct and indirect testimonies of the Mačva pogrom. Formal artistic solutions highlight the effect of these engaged images testifying the direct and indirect experiences of the Mačva pogrom. At the same time, the power of oral history surpassed personal memories over time, turning into a collective testimony to the atrocities committed during the Great War. The colonial, racial, and hegemonic act of the occupying armed forces with time grew into an official narrative about the hostile Other, which defined the official politics of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The Mačva pogrom finally became a place of remembrance of the Serbian and Yugoslav communities, creating the basis for nurturing the memory of the 1914 war trauma between history and memory. The transformation of personal memories into collective narratives points to the standardisation of memory and its instalment into the official ideological practices of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Finally, in the Interwar Period, in that interspace between the experienced and the remembered, traumatic memories were used and set within the concentric circles of public memory.
