AB - To understand the reasons behind the trend of growing use of traditional, complementary and alternative (TCAM) practices this study sought to uncover how people use them - to prevent disease/promote health, to treat medical conditions by complementing official medical treatments, or as an alternative to them. A sample of N = 583 Serbian citizens completed an online questionnaire assessing four TCAM domains: Alternative medical systems (AMS), Natural product-based practices (NP), New Age medicine (NA), and Rituals/Customs (RC). Participants indicated whether they had used a given practice in the past year, and if yes, how they used it. Overall, participants used TCAM preventively in two-thirds of cases, but we also found a significant association between TCAM domain and way of use. AMS was used alternatively more than any other TCAM domain, NP was the most prevalent complementary treatment, while NA and RC were predominantly used preventively. Our results suggest that different domains of TCAM practices may impact people’s health differently, depending on how they are used, which should inform interventions.

AB - People resort to various questionable health practices to preserve or regain health - they intentionally do not adhere to medical recommendations (e.g. self-medicate or modify the prescribed therapies; iNAR), or use traditional/complementary/alternative (TCAM) medicine. As retrospective reports overestimate adherence and suffer from recall and desirability bias, we tracked the variations in daily questionable health behaviors and compared them to their retrospectively reported lifetime use. We also preregistered and explored their relations to a wide set of psychological predictors - distal (personality traits and basic thinking dispositions) and proximal (different unfounded beliefs and biases grouped under the term irrational mindset). A community sample (N = 224) tracked daily engagement in iNAR and TCAM use for 14 days, resulting in 3136 data points. We observed a high rate of questionable health practices over the 14 days; daily engagement rates roughly corresponded to lifetime ones. Both iNAR and TCAM were weakly, but robustly positively related. Independent of the assessment method, an irrational mindset was the most important predictor of TCAM use. For iNAR, however, psychological predictors emerged as relevant only when assessed retrospectively. Our study offers insight into questionable health behaviors from both a within and between-person perspective and highlights the importance of their psychological roots.

AB - Introduction We will launch a national survey in Serbia to document the prevalence of two types of questionable health behaviours: (1) intentional non-adherence to medical recommendations and (2) use of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine practices, as well as the relation between the two. We will also investigate their psychological roots, including (a) ‘distal’ predictors such as HEXACO personality traits (plus Disintegration) and thinking dispositions (rational/experiential thinking and cognitive reflexivity), and (b) ‘proximal’ predictors under the umbrella ‘irrational mindset’ (set of unfounded beliefs consisting of conspiratorial thinking, superstition, magical health beliefs as well as selected cognitive biases), which have more content-wise overlap with the health behaviours.

Methods and analysis In this cross-sectional study, a research agency will collect data from a nationally representative sample (n=1043; age 18–75 years; estimated start/end—June/November 2023) recruited online (approximately, 70% of the sample, aged 18–54; 11 years) and face-to-face (approximately, 30% of the sample, aged 55–75 years). Participants will complete a battery of tests assessing questionable health behaviours, basic personality traits, thinking dispositions, irrational mindset, sociopolitical beliefs, sociodemographic and health-related variables. Prevalence rates will be calculated using descriptive statistics. To explore the relation between (psychological) predictors and questionable health behaviours, we will use hierarchical regression and partial mediation models (path analysis or full SEM models).

Ethics and dissemination Ethical Committees of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade (#935/1), Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation (#139/1) and Faculty of Media and Communications (#228) approved the protocol. Only participants who provide informed consent will participate in the study. A research report based on the study results will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and results will be made available to stakeholders through reports on the project website https://reasonforhealth.f.bg.ac.rs/en/ and disseminated via social media.

AB - The Rational-Experiential Inventory-40 (REI-40, Pacini & Epstein, 1999), proposed in the framework of the cognitive-experiential self-theory (CEST) is a widely used instrument for measuring thinking styles. Similar to other dual-processing models, CEST distinguishes between automatic, effortless, rapid (experientiality) and conscious, analytical, effortful, slower (rationality) thinking styles. A short version, REI-10, has already been proposed (Epstein et al., 1996), however, it is based on an outdated REI version and is not compatible with REI-40. There are also modified versions of REI which attempt to capture facets of experientiality, but REI-40 is still used more often than other versions. In the current study we aimed to provide a brief version of REI-40 by employing an Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) algorithm (Leite et al., 2008; Marcoulides & Drezner, 2009).
We used an existing dataset, collected in the Serbian validation of REI-40, comprising N = 813 students (Purić & Jokić, 2022), 68% females, Mage = 19.79 (SD = 1.85). We used the ACO procedure to select four items per each REI scale - Rationality and Experientiality, so as to maximize both confirmatory factor analysis model fit, indicated by high Comparative Fit Index (CFI) and low Root Mean Square of Approximation (RMSEA), and high reliability.
The resulting instrument, REI-8 demonstrated good model fit: CFI = .99 and RMSEA = .062 [95% CI .048, .076], as well as reliability - Cronbach’s alpha was .75 for both Rationality and Experientiality, while McDonald’s omega was slightly higher at .78 for both REI-8 scales. The correlations between REI-8 scales and corresponding REI-40 scales were very high, r = .82 and r = .84, for rationality and experientiality, respectively, and the two dimensions were practically uncorrelated r = .04, as the CEST model proposes.
Overall, we have constructed a very brief 8-item version of REI which is both reliable and structurally valid. This instrument could be used in large-scale studies where time is limited.

AB - The main project methodology is planned in five stages that inform one another and cross-validate data from multiple methods. These include: (1) A study documenting online media coverage of TM/CAM practices in Serbia. This study will use a qualitative methodology, and conduct a content analysis of news stories from the five most popular news websites in Serbia, focusing on identifying the types of reported practices and content of the advice (e.g., whether risks are addressed) (2) Development of instruments for assessing familiarity and frequency of two types of health behaviors: engagement with different TM/CAM practices, as well as the frequency of NAR. Instrument development will be based on the results of the qualitative study, literature review, input from medical and CAM practitioners. The instrument will be piloted on a convenience sample (3) A study tracking the prevalence and the pattern of TM/CAM usage and NAR during 3 weeks on a community sample. This study will consist of a development of a mobile app and battery for experience sampling of TM/CAM and NAR behaviors over 21 days and their relations with personality and cognitive styles in a community sample (4) Examining the relations between these two types of health behaviors on a general population. This study will explore the relations between TM/CAM, NAR, personality, and cognitive styles on a representative sample in Serbia. (5) Developing interventions aimed at reducing TM/CAM use and NAR through changing the irrational mindset. This study will be experimental and will examine how inducing or reducing irrational beliefs affects health behaviors, and if certain personality traits and/or thinking styles moderate the outcome of these interventions.

abstract = "The main project methodology is planned in five stages that inform one another and cross-validate data from multiple methods. AB - Non-adherence to medical recommendations (NAR) leads to increasing mortality/disease rates and raises the costs of treatments, thus it is a burden on the healthcare system. Typically viewed as harmless, the use of traditional/complementary/alternative medicine (TM/CAM) can lead to adverse health events, but also to avoidance of official treatment or undesirable interaction with it. Thus, there is an increasing call in the medical community to promote evidence-based use of TM/CAM and adherence to official advice; understanding why consumers opt for questionable health practices can contribute to this call. We put forward a comprehensive program to study the psychological roots of these two broad categories of questionable health practices. The program offers a framework for concepts from cognitive, personality, social, and health psychology. We propose that an irrational mindset (a system of irrational thinking and beliefs), rooted in basic psychological dispositions (personality, thinking styles) makes certain consumers susceptible to NAR and TM/CAM practices. We plan to: a. explore the media environment the consumers are exposed to (e.g. predatory practices in advertising TM/CAM), b. identify the large spectrum of NAR and TM/CAM typical for the local cultural context, c. test whether irrational beliefs of very different content really form a mindset (how they are interrelated), d. measure the prevalence of NAR and TM/CAM and relate them to irrational mindset and further to personality traits, and e. test whether the TM/CAM proneness can be affected by manipulating irrational beliefs. The results will be useful to stakeholders in different ways: information on the prevalence of TM/CAM and NAR in Serbia is useful by itself, but identifying their underlying psychological mechanisms will help in understanding the most vulnerable portions of the population. In addition, we will provide useful input for designing interventions that will support consumers in making rational health decisions.

AB - There is evidence that different types of irrational thinking and beliefs are significant predictors of questionable and maladaptive COVID-19 related health practices. In this study, we investigated the role of two under-researched types of irrational thinking, more typical for a clinical setting: irrational beliefs defined in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and attachment anxiety and avoidance. We investigated whether REBT irrational beliefs, attachment dimensions, and conspiracy mentality mediated the relationship between personality traits, on the one side, and COVID-19 health behaviors, on the other. We proposed that HEXACO personality traits, and especially Disintegration (proneness to psychotic-like experiences) predicted irrational thinking and beliefs, which in turn predicted higher susceptibility to questionable health practices. Structural equation modeling on a sample of 287 participants from the general population, showed that Disintegration was related to REBT irrational beliefs, attachment dimensions, and conspiracy mentality, highlighting the important effect of Disintegration on irrational thinking and beliefs. Conspiracy mentality mediated the effects of Disintegration to low adherence to recommended health behaviors – RHB, and greater use of pseudoscientific practices – PSP. Attachment anxiety mediated the relationship between high Disintegration, high Emotionality (E), and low Honesty (H), and lower adherence to RHB. REBT irrational beliefs and attachment avoidance did not mediate the relationship between personality traits and COVID-19 health behaviors.

AB - The goal of the study is to investigate the relationship between the HEXACO personality model and Disintegration—representing a broad spectrum of psychotic-like experiences and behavioral tendencies (Perceptual Distortions, General Executive/Cognitive Impairment, Enhanced Awareness, Paranoia, Mania, Flattened Affect, Apathy/Depression, Somatoform Dysregulation, and Magical Thinking) that are reconceptualized as a personality trait. In this preregistered study, we predicted that the Disintegration factor would separate from HEXACO. The replicability of the factorial structures of HEXACO and Disintegration subcomponents is investigated across the three national samples (UK, Germany, and Serbia), matched on key socio-demographic variables. Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) is used to study the invariance of the hypothesized seven-factor structure (six HEXACO plus Disintegration). Support for the metric invariance of the seven-factor structure based on HEXACO and Disintegration subcomponents/facets across the three nations was found. The Disintegration factor lied outside the HEXACO personality space with each of its nine subcomponents. The Disintegration factor appeared to be among the most coherent and replicable of the seven across the samples and units of measurement (facets and items). A broad spectrum of psychotic-like experiences/behavioral tendencies relevant in understanding and explaining many aspects of everyday and long-term (mal)adaptations is not captured by the HEXACO model.

The Role of personality, conspiracy Mentality, REBT irrational beliefs, and attachment in COVID-19 health behaviors

AB - Evidence suggests that low adherence to recommended health behaviors (RHB) and the use of pseudo-scientific practices (PSP) during the COVID-19 pandemic is predicted by various types of irrational thinking and beliefs. This study investigates the role of different irrational beliefs and attitudes (i.e., REBT irrational beliefs and attachment anxiety and avoidance), as mediators of the relationship between seven personality traits (HEXACO and Disintegration) and COVID-19 health behaviors. We included a third mediator - conspiracy mentality, as an already established predictor of both non-adherence to RHB and PSP. We expected mediators to correlate with non-adherence to RHB, and Disintegration to be related to all mediator variables. An online survey was conducted during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia - between December 2020 and March 2021. The final sample consisted of 287 participants (80.1% female, M (age) = 31.86, SD = 13.79). Used measures: the Brief HEXACO Inventory (BHI), DELTA 9 (Disintegration trait), the short form of Experience in Close Relationships (ECR-RD12) (attachment anxiety and avoidance), The shortened General Attitude and Belief Scale (REBT irrational beliefs), and Conspiracy Mentality Questionnaire. We created questionnaires assessing adherence to RHB (11 items referring to mask-wearing and social distancing), and PSP (8 items referring to alternative and traditional medicine). With two items we measured the behaviors regarding vaccination, i.e., whether the respondent already got the COVID-19 vaccine or is intended to take it, and whether the respondent would recommend the vaccine to a close person. To investigate the relationship between variables we used structural equation modeling. Sociodemographic variables (age, gender, and education) were included in the model. The tested mediation model showed very good fit indices: χ2 (61) =107.23, RMSEA [CI90%]=.051 [.035-.067], CFI=.951, TLI=.919, SRMR=.045. The only independent variable that did not show significant effects on mediator and outcome variables was Conscientiousness. In line with our expectations, our findings show Disintegration is the only personality trait related to all mediating variables, corroborating our
previous results on the importance of Disintegration in the emergence of irrational beliefs. As expected, results show that conspiracy mentality mediates the role of Disintegration in low adherence to RHB, negative vaccination behavior, and greater use of PSP. Additionally, attachment anxiety mediates the relationship between personality traits (high Disintegration, high Emotionality, and low Honesty) and lower adherence to RHB. Higher adherence to RHB predicted positive vaccination behavior, whilst there was no relationship between PSP use and vaccination behavior. REBT irrational beliefs and attachment avoidance were not found to be significant mediators of the relationship between personality traits and COVID-19 health behaviors.

AB - Prompted by the need to measure the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 on main areas of quality of life related to mental health (MH), the COV-19-impact on quality of life (COV19-QoL) scale has been developed recently. We measured how patients seeking face-to-face MH care perceived the coronavirus disease 2019 impact on QoL and how socio-demographic factors, stress, and personality contributed to QoL in this diagnostically diverse population. Patients aged 18 to 65 years (n = 251) who came for the first time to the outpatient units during the 6-week index-period (May 21-July 1, 2020) were included. The cross-sectional assessment involved sociodemographic variables, working diagnosis, personality traits (7-dimension model, including HEXACO and DELTA), stress (list of threatening experiences and proximity to virus), and COV19-QoL. The perceived impact of the pandemic on QoL was above the theoretical mean of a 5-point scale (COV19-Qol = 3.1 +/- 1.2). No association between total COV19-QoL score, sociodemographic parameters, and working diagnoses was found in the present sample. After testing whether positional (threatening experiences), or dispositional (personality) factors were predominant in the perceived impact of COV-19 on QoL, significant predictors of the outcome were personality traits Disintegration (B = 0.52; P lt .01) and Emotionality (B = 0.18; P lt .05). It seems that pervasiveness and uncertainty of the pandemic threat triggers-especially in those high on Disintegration trait-a chain of mental events with the decrease of QoL as a final result. Present findings could be used to establish a profile of MH help seeking population in relation to this biological disaster, and to further explore QoL and personality in different contexts.

AB - Football supporters represent a specific social group which is prone to violence and ideologically based extremist behavior. In the present study we explored whether football supporters in Serbia are characterized by Militant Extremist Mind-Set (MEM), a set of beliefs characterized by terrorists and ideological extremists. MEM is constituted of three factors: Proviolence, Vile World and Divine Power. We hypothesized that all three factors are more pronounced in football supporters than in the control group of participants; furthermore, we assumed that MEM factors have an independent contribution in the prediction of support for extremist social movements. Relations between these variables are explored in a combined sample of male football supporters (N = 128) and the control group (N = 118). Obtained results confirmed all hypotheses. All MEM factors were found to be more pronounced in football supporters. All three beliefs independently predicted support for extremist social movements. Finally, the interaction between group membership and Vile World in predicting support for the extremist movements was found: football supporters with elevated belief in Vile World were especially prone to affiliate with extremist movements. Study findings provided additional insight into the ideological characteristics of football supporters in Serbia and contributed to the identification of individuals who are particularly susceptible to violent extremism.

AB - Background: Based on the known relationship between the human emotion and standard surface electrocardiogram (ECG), we explored the relationship between features
extracted from standard ECG recorded during relaxation and seven personality traits
(Honesty/humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness,
Openness, and Disintegration) by using the machine learning (ML) approach which
learns from the ECG-based features and predicts the appropriate personality trait by
adopting an automated software algorithm.
Methods: A total of 71 healthy university students participated in the study. For
quantification of 62 ECG-based parameters (heart rate variability, as well as temporal
and amplitude-based parameters) for each ECG record, we used computation procedures together with publicly available data and code. Among 62 parameters, 34 were
segregated into separate features according to their diagnostic relevance in clinical
practice. To examine the feature influence on personality trait classification and to
perform classification, we used random forest ML algorithm.
Results: Classification accuracy when clinically relevant ECG features were employed was high for Disintegration (81.3%) and Honesty/humility (75.0%) and moderate to high for Openness (73.3%) and Conscientiousness (70%), while it was low
for Agreeableness (56.3%), eXtraversion (47.1%), and Emotionality (43.8%). When all
calculated features were used, the classification accuracies were the same or lower,
except for the eXtraversion (52.9%). Correlation analysis for selected features is
presented.
Conclusions: Results indicate that clinically relevant features might be applicable for
personality traits prediction, although no remarkable differences were found among
selected groups of parameters. Physiological associations of established relationships
should be further explored.

AB - The study aimed to investigate the role of personality, thinking styles, and conspiracy mentality in health-related behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., recommended health behaviors according to COVID-19 guidelines and engagement in pseudoscientific practices related to COVID-19. Basic personality space was defined by the HEXACO model complemented by Disintegration, which represents psychotic-like experiences and behaviors reconceptualized as a personality trait. Mediation analyses conducted on a convenient sample from the general population recruited via social media and by snowballing (N = 417) showed that engagement in pseudoscientific behaviors was predicted by high Disintegration. However, this relationship was entirely mediated by high experiential and low rational thinking styles. Adherence to health practices recommended by COVID-19 guidelines was predicted by high Honesty traits, while low Disintegration had both direct and indirect effects through conspiracy mentality.

Does the disposition towards psychotic-like experiences incrementally predict grandiose narcissism? Representative evidence from Germany

AB - A process model of narcissism proposes two positively related but distinct subdimensions of grandiose narcissism: admiration (agentic/bright) and rivalry (antagonistic/dark). We explore the relationship between narcissism and the Big Five personality dimensions plus disintegration, that is, the dispositional tendency to psychotic-like experiences. We hypothesize that disintegration has an incremental contribution in explaining narcissism beyond the Big Five. The sample consisted of 2618 respondents representative of the German population. Narcissism was assessed by the NARQ questionnaire, Big Five traits by the Big Five Inventory, and disintegration by the DELTA scale. As expected, disintegration contributed to explaining both subdimensions of narcissism over and above the Big Five. A specific personality configuration we named "destructive personality profile," composed of low conscientiousness (C), low agreeableness (A), and high disintegration (D), was related to both aspects of narcissism. Rivalry had a stronger relation to the "destructive personality profile" than admiration.

AB - The objective of the study was to investigate the validity of IAT in the assessment of the Big five personality traits. We employed the Multi-Trait Multi-Method (MTMM) approach on a sample of 146 respondents. We collected measures on IATs assessing Big five personality traits, self-reports, and two ratings of close others of different gender on NEO PI-R. Additionally, we assessed behavior related to the Big five personality traits in a structured interview where three experts independently provided rating measures. MTMM analyses suggest that personality IAT measures have little in common with personality traits measured traditionally using explicit methods. The evidence does not support the claim that personality IAT can serve as a valid measure of individual differences in personality traits.

AB - We provide evidence on the convergence of language-based questionnaire and biological perspectives on personality traits. The first study, conducted on Serbian students, provided evidence on the position of Panksepp's Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS) in the personality space defined by HEXACO facets. The second, replicatory study was conducted on a sample of German young adults. Results show that the instruments based on these 2 approaches target highly similar personality phenomena, which is revealed in the high canonical correlations between them (the first 3 being above .70 in both samples). Despite the overlap, the scales measuring emotional systems do not map onto HEXACO factors one-to-one, and mostly have substantial loading on more than 1 HEXACO factor. The pattern of correlations between HEXACO and ANPS scales was highly similar in the 2 samples. The importance of the findings for the personality taxonomy and theory is discussed.

AB - The ambulatory assessment offers a wide range of methods enabling researchers to investigate psychological, behavioral, emotional, and biological processes. These methods enable us to gather data on individual differences in language use for psychological research. Two studies were conducted with an aim to evaluate and compare the temporal stability of language measures extracted by LIWC software form data obtained by two frequently used methods for assessment of language use, i.e., Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR) and stream of consciousness (SOC) task. Additionally, we examined the amount of variance in language use (assessed by both methods) that can be attributed to intra-individual variability and stable individual differences. Study 1 was focused on investigating language use obtained from 74 respondents using the EAR for 3 consecutive days. Study 2 was conducted on 250 respondents participating in a SOC task where verbal production was collected at ten time points over a 2-month period. Results show that measures obtained using the SOC task have higher temporal stability and consistency, and to a certain extent enable better detection of individual differences. Taking into account certain situational variations improves the reliability of EAR measures.

AB - This study investigates the attitudinal and motivational bases of militant extremist beliefs in a postconflict society (N = 600; 51% female). Militant extremist mindset (MEM) measures of proviolence, divine power, utopianism, vile world, and West, together with the Ethos of Conflict- Grudge Scale (EOC-grudge), were used to assess militant-extremist beliefs. Data about the socioeconomic status (SES) of participants, ethnocentrism, intergroup contact, trust in the system, and the level of conflict in the sampled areas were also collected. The main hypotheses were that extremist beliefs are associated with a high level of ethnocentrism, low socioeconomic status, decreased intergroup contact, low trust in the system, and recent intergroup conflict. A structural model in which all relations between the measures were simultaneously tested showed that recent intergroup conflict was related to the most malignant aspect of MEM-proviolence-predominantly through negative experiences with members of other ethnicities. Ethnocentrism was strongly related to higher levels of grudge and excuse. Self-assessed socioeconomic status was related to grudge only but taking into account all other variables, positively. Finally, trust in the political and social system was not found to have a relationship with militant-extremist beliefs.

AB - The process of personality judgment occurs in daily social interactions and represents an attempt to identify characteristics of someone else's personality, in the way to explain past and predict future behaviors. The results of this process have implications on future decisions and actions of people. This research aimed to examine the accuracy of non-expert ratings of Extraversion and Conscientiousness based on short written texts. The sample consisted of 215 participants (M-age = 28.58, SD = 10.30; 80.5% females). The exclusion criterion was that participants were psychologists or psychology students, i.e., individuals familiar with personality research and taxonomies. Participants rated Extraversion and Conscientiousness, based on the texts written by five different individuals. Criteria used to estimate the accuracy of judgments were the agreement between self-report measures on HEXACO PI-R from people who wrote the texts and ratings from participants, as well as the agreement between multiple raters. The results showed that there was a moderate self-other agreement for Extraversion and Conscientiousness. Also, the results showed that there was a high between-raters agreement for Extraversion and Conscientiousness. This study indicates that it is possible to judge one's personality based on written verbal production, as well that raters tend to form similar impressions about the personality from written texts.

AB - Eysenck's model of personality (PEN) was one of the most influential personality models in the 20th century. A unique characteristic of this model is the claim of psychosis-proneness being incorporated into it as one of its three basic traits - Psychoticism. The main goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to find out the associations between PEN traits and a diverse set of operationalizations of psychosis-proneness (PP). We set the benchmark for assuming their distinctness to a correlation coefficient amounting to 0.40. A systematic review has been conducted, yielding 350 correlations of interest. By computing inverse sampling variance weighted mean correlation coefficients, we found the following associations between psychosis-proneness and Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism, respectively: 0.21, -0.09, and 0.30. All prediction intervals around the three mean effect sizes do include zero, suggesting that psychosis-proneness is only marginally captured by the PEN model. Moderator analyses further demonstrated this distinctness and the lack of phenotypic validity of the Psychoticism scale/construct.

AB - Schizotypy is a construct used to describe a group of persons with symptoms which do not fulfill criteria for schizophrenia, but have some similarities with this complex and heterogeneous psychiatric disorder. ICD-10 describes schizotypy as a state (schizotypal disorder), while DSM-5 labels it as a trait marker (schizotypal personality disorder). Considering how schizotypy encompasses through the normal, subclinical and clinical population, a thorough theoretical understanding of this concept could be helpful in developing measures of assessment. So far, most of the tools for psychometric evaluation of schizotypy have focused only on abnormal personality. The present article focuses on the evolution of the term schizotypy, its current understanding, the possibilities of psychometric assessment in relation to contemporary constructs of personality and on clinical considerations for improved detection and intervention in this field.

AB - Which is more enjoyable: trying to think enjoyable thoughts or doing everyday solitary activities? Wilson et al. (2014) found that American participants much preferred solitary everyday activities, such as reading or watching TV, to thinking for pleasure. To see whether this preference generalized outside of the United States, we replicated the study with 2,557 participants from 12 sites in 11 countries. The results were consistent in every country: Participants randomly assigned to do something reported significantly greater enjoyment than did participants randomly assigned to think for pleasure. Although we found systematic differences by country in how much participants enjoyed thinking for pleasure, we used a series of nested structural equation models to show that these differences were fully accounted for by country-level variation in 5 individual differences, 4 of which were positively correlated with thinking for pleasure (need for cognition, openness to experience, meditation experience, and initial positive affect) and 1 of which was negatively correlated (reported phone usage).

AB - This study explores the structure of Militant Extremist Mindset (MEM) within a sample of participants living in areas with enhanced risk of intergroup conflict. We were also interested in comparing members of three different ethnic groups (Serbs, Albanians, and Bosniaks) on MEM measures. A short version of the MEM scale was created for future use. We found that the factorial structure of MEM was replicated in the sample composed of people from both sides of a conflict. Ethnic groups did not differ significantly on the Grudge component of MEM. Group differences were pronounced on the Pro-violence and Utopianism factors. Albanians scored higher than Bosniaks and Serbs on these two dimensions. However, significant differences were obtained on the Ethos of Conflict (EOC) factor when groups of Serbs living within and outside areas of recent conflict were compared.

Rezultati.
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which include the ulcerative colitis (UC) and the Crohn's disease (CD), are chronic diseases, the course of which is under the influence of numerous psychosocial factors. The aim of this study was the exploration of the personality traits of patients with IBD. Methods. This cross-sectional study has been conducted at the University Clinical Hospital Centre Zvezdara, Belgrade, Serbia. The study involved 150 patients suffering from IBD of both genders, out of which 50.7% and 49.3% of the patients suffering from UC and CD, respectively. The main inclusion criteria were: age 18 to 65 years and confirmed the diagnosis of UC or CD in remission. The sociodemographic and disease related data were collected from the hospital medical records. The personality traits related data were collected using the self-report forms of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) and the inventory for the Assessment of Dysregulation (DELTA 10). Results. At the domain-level, the significant differences between IBD sample and normative sample were found in the Neuroticism (p lt 0.01) and the Disintegration (p lt 0.01). At the facet-level, the IBD sample scored significantly higher than the normative sample on Anxiety (p lt 0.01), Assertiveness (p lt 0.01), Tender-Mindedness (p lt 0.01) and Dutifulness (p lt 0.01), and the significantly lower scores on Warmth (p lt 0.01), Excitement Seeking (p lt 0.01), Positive Emotion (p lt 0.01), Actions (p lt 0.01), and on the all facets of Disintegration except Depression, Somatoform Dysregulation and Social Anhedonia (p lt 0.01). The differences between UC and CD were found only at the facet-level. The facets that adds the most predictive power to the discriminative function is the General Executive Impairment, followed by Warmth, Self-Discipline, Depression and Mania. Conclusion. The IBD patients showed to differ from the general population in terms of basic personality structure at the domain-level, and at the facet-level. The differences between the UC and CD patients can be found only at the facet-level. Screening of the personality traits and early detection of the IBD patients who are at a greater risk of mental disorders and bad psychosocial functioning can enable their adequate prevention and improve the course of the disease.

AB - Vandalism, the intentional act to destruct or to deface a property not one's own, has received surprisingly little attention in psychological research so far. The present contribution addresses this gap and applies a basic personality perspective to vandalism. Here, we focused on one specific manifestation of vandalism, that is, destroying things for pleasure. In the present study (N = 221), we assessed individual differences in sadism, the dark triad of psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism as well as the HEXACO personality model. Multiple regression analyses revealed that individual differences in sadism predict vandalistic acts that are executed for pleasure. This relation was shown to be independent of the dark triad and the HEXACO dimensions. As such, the present contribution suggests that sadistic orientations might play a role in vandalistic acts that are executed for pleasure. Implications for research on sadism and vandalism are discussed.
