(Carpinus betulus)

AB - ARCHAEOWILD: The Holocene History of Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence: Archaeozoological, Archaeobotanical, Isotopic, Ancient DNA, Iconographic and Written Evidence from the Central Balkans je istraživački projekat koji u periodu od 2022–2025. godine finansira Fond za nauku Republike Srbije u okviru programa IDEJE, a koji se realizuje u Laboratoriji za bioarheologiju na Filozofskom fakultetu u Beogradu. Kombinovanjem različitih naučnih oblasti i metoda istraživanja (arheozoologija, arheobotanika, analize drevne DNK, analize stabilnih izotopa, apsolutno datovanje, analiza istorijskih izvora i ikonografije), projekat istražuje istoriju sukoba i suživota ljudi i divljeg sveta u holocenu na prostoru centralnog Balkana. U ovom radu biće predstavljen istraživački okvir i planirani uticaj projekta ARCHAEOWILD, kao i rezultati realizacije projektnih aktivnosti u prvoj godini projekta.

AB - The usual answer to the age–old question of "why do we need archaeology today" often sounds like "because in order to tackle the modern problems, we need to understand the way past societies dealt with them". The project ARCHAEOWILD, funded by the Science Fund of Republic of Serbia, tries to understand the Holocene history of the Human – Wildlife conflict and coexistence. This will provide modern conservation and wildlife management experts with an elaborate overview of the spatial and temporal distribution of wild animals and plants in the Central Balkans from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages. Our goal is to use a large amount of biomolecular data, including aDNA and C/N stable isotopes, to provide a new understanding of the paleoecology of wild animals that were frequently hunted during the Holocene period, such as red deer and brown bear. We will also investigate the reasons behind the regional disappearance of globally extinct mammals such as the aurochs and European wild ass, while also examining the origins of exotic wildlife, such as fallow deer and leopards.
On the other hand, another important question has been popping up regularly in the last couple of years. “Why do we need archaeologists”, which especially targets the younger generations on the verge of their academic careers. Universities have started shutting down archaeology departments, leaving fewer options for the newly graduates, who end up searching for a career change. Again, projects such as ARCHAEOWILD can be a good example of dealing with this type of issue, since six out of eight people employed were post–graduate students at the start of the project, while for the three of them this was their first job in the field.

AB - As some of the greatest threats humanity is currently facing, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, have their roots in our distant past, archaeology is becoming more and more involved in the research of their causes and effects. Archaeologists are becoming more aware of the significance of studying long-term human-environmental relationships via analysis of animal and plant remains from archaeological sites for modern environmental problems, and paleoenvironmental data are sometimes included in conservation decisions. In this paper, within the framework of the scientific project ARCHAEOWILD, which studies human-wildlife interactions in the Holocene past of the CentralBalkans, we stress the significance of research that provides data on the spatiotemporal distribution of wildlife, extinction dynamics, translocations, as well as genetic diversity and dietary patterns of large mammals in the past for future wildlife management decisions in the region

AB - Pelagonia is a mountain valley in North Macedonia that was densely occupied by early farming communities in the second
half of the 7th and early 6th millennium bce. Archaeobotanical analysis is being done on material from three sites there,
Vrbjanska Čuka, Veluška Tumba and Vlaho. This paper presents the results of archaeobotanical analyses of remains from
Pelagonia, which represent some of the oldest directly dated remains of cereals and pulses in Europe, and discusses the
results on crop diversity among Early Neolithic communities within the region. The crop spectrum was broad, with five
cereal species and several varieties, two pulses and potentially two oil crops. The diversity is slightly narrower than the
one found in southwestern Asia, Greece and Bulgaria as Cicer arietinum (chickpea), Lathyrus sativus (grass pea) and Vicia
ervilia (bitter vetch) were not present or very rare, and Triticum aestivum/durum (naked wheat) was only found in small
amounts, probably because the early farmers were adapting their choices of crops to the different climatic conditions in
Pelagonia. On the micro-regional level we have observed that the diversity and importance of certain crops may vary in
relation to the 8.2 ka bp climate cooling event, as well as due to local environmental or cultural factors, showing the need
for finer scale analyses beyond the level of site or phase.

abstract = "Pelagonia is a mountain valley in North Macedonia that was densely occupied by early farming communities in the second
half of the 7th and early 6th millennium bce.
The diversity is slightly narrower than the
one found in southwestern Asia, Greece and Bulgaria as Cicer arietinum (chickpea), Lathyrus sativus (grass pea) and Vicia
ervilia (bitter vetch) were not present or very rare, and Triticum aestivum/durum (naked wheat) was only found in small
amounts, probably because the early farmers were adapting their choices of crops to the different climatic conditions in
Pelagonia. On the micro-regional level we have observed that the diversity and importance of certain crops may vary in
relation to the 8.2 ka bp climate cooling event, as well as due to local environmental or cultural factors, showing the need
for finer scale analyses beyond the level of site or phase.",

AB - The earliest evidence for the start of the Neolithic in the Central Balkans is dated to the last several centuries of the 7th millenium BCE. One region which was densely occupied by early farming communities is Pelagonia, a valley spreading in North Macedonia and Greece. Most settlements were formed in the later phases of the Early Neolithic in terms of Balkan chronology, and were in use for several centuries, developing into tell sites where charred plant remains got preserved in excellent conditions. New research which involves archaeobotanical analysis is being conducted at three sites- Vrbjanska Čuka, Veluška Tumba and Vlaho. This has facilitated the understanding of the crop cultivation and the utilization of wild plants by the prehistoric settlers in the area, thus providing new and valuable data for a region close to the first focus of spread of farming in Europe. It is apparent that the economy and the diet of these communities principally relied on cultivated plants, even though they exploited a vast array of wild resources as well. The crop spectrum resembles the one in the surrounding areas like northern Greece and Bulgaria, with the predominance of hulled cereals- einkorn, emmer, Timopheevi wheat and barley (naked and hulled). Naked wheat was encountered in very small quantities. Furthermore, pulses like lentil and pea had a prominent role. Amid the plants which could have been gathered from the wild and brought to the settlement for consumption are various species with edible fleshy fruits, nuts, berries, seeds and leaves, such as sloe, bramble, cornelian-cherry, elderberry, hazel and fat-hen. In this presentation we will attempt to give a first regional synthesis about the onset of farming in the study area, including a discussion of domestication traits in cereals and pulses in the studied material.

AB - The project ARCHAEOWILD, funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, investigates the Holocene history of human-wildlife interactions within one of European biodiversity hotspots, the Central Balkans. By incorporating data of archaeozoology and archaeobotany, aDNA and stable isotopes, ancient texts, and iconography, the project will give a diachronic insight into wildlife biogeography, large mammals extinction dynamics, anthropogenic pressure on the environment, and symbolic aspects of HWI in the region. Through the medium of a short movie, project members will present a research framework of the project with the emphasis on its impacts relevant to contemporary biodiversity issues.

understanding the spread of agriculture
into theMediterranean andCentral Europe.
To date, however, the area has been subject
to relatively limited archaeological research.
Here, the authors present use-wear and
archaeobotanical analyses on material from
two Neolithic sites, Govrelevo and
Vrbjanska Čuka, to investigate practices
that were previously unstudied in this part
of the Balkans, such as sowing, cultivation
and harvesting techniques. The results suggest
the presence of permanent crop fields
located in wetlands, with autumn and
spring sowing, and harvesting using curved
sickles. The study illuminates early agricultural
practices in North Macedonia and
adds to our knowledge of the spread of
the Neolithic package across Europe.

AB - This paper summarizes the preliminary results of archaeobotanical analyses coupled with
information gathered through the micro-refuse approach with focus on two early Neolithic
sites in the Pelagonia Vаlley in North Macedonia; Vrbjanska Čuka and Veluška Tumba. The
main topic considered is the use of plants and domestic spaces, with aspects like agriculture,,
diet and household activities being discussed. The diet and the economy of these communities
is believed to depend mostly on agriculture, and the diachronic observations show its higher
relevance in the later phases of the Early Neolithic period. The majority of crops are cereals with
einkorn being the dominant one, but other species such as emmer, barley and Timopheevi wheat
are also significantly abundant. Pulses; like pea and lentil, were important as well. Nevertheless,
wild species were also gathered and brought to the village; most probably for consumption
purposes. They were most commonly fruits; nuts and leaf vegetables. Micro-refuse approach
illuminated the activities which were performed in the houses and helped us identify cooking
waste residues, areas of crop processing, areas of litter disposal, and in that way clarified the
use of domestic spaces.

AB - Vrbjanska Čuka is a tell site in the region of Pelagonia (Macedonia) established 8000 years ago by the Neolithic communities. Later it was used as an agricultural unit during the Roman era and the Middle Ages when it was also employed as a burial area. The excavations per-formed in the 1980s and during the last five years indicate a Neolithic farming society that constructed large build-ings made of daub in a settlement enclosed by a circular ditch. The buildings had many clay structures, such as ovens, granaries, bins and grinding areas for processing cereals and bread production. The Neolithic communities used sophisticated fine pottery and modeled figurines and altars, while the stone tools were mainly used for cutting trees, harvesting and grinding. Apart from the cere-al-based food (einkorn wheat, emmer wheat or barley), the inhabitants of Vrbjanska Čuka consumed lentils, peas and a variety of gathered wild fruits, while cattle, caprovine, mussels, fish and wild game meat was also part of a diet, as well as the dairy products. This paper will be a summary of a variety of data provided from the current international and multidisciplinary research of the site that involves excavation, prospection, geomagnetic survey, study of material culture, examination of architecture, radiocarbon dating, geoarchaeological, archaeobotanical, archaeo-zoological, lipid and use-wear analyses, as well as the topographic and 3D modeling. The recent knowledge on Vrbjanska Čuka provides novel understanding of the Early Neolithic in Pelagonia and contributes to the more exten-sive research of first farming societies in the Balkans.

AB - New research, which involves the systematic collection of sediment samples,
their treatment with the wash-over method, extraction of micro-refuse, and
their subsequent analysis, started being implemented at archaeological sites in the Pelagonia Valley (North Macedonia) in the summer of 2019. Three
Early Neolithic (ca. 6000–5800 cal BC) sites are being investigated and
compared, with a focus on archaeobotanical materials, but also on other
environmental
and palaeoeconomic evidence. This paper presents the
methodology applied and the first results from a series of samples (those for
which the analyses were completed in 2021) from the 2019 campaign at the
site of Vrbjanska Čuka. The goal is to illustrate the potential of micro-refuse
analysis of samples coming from house contexts.

AB - Through the investigation of plant macro-remains recovered from different contexts connected to storage, plant processing and consumption, the diet of prehistoric communities can be meticulously investigated. The numerous charred remains recovered from such contexts from the Early Bronze Age I settlement of Arslantepe (3000-2800 cal. BCE) give strong evidence pointing to a subsistence pattern greatly relying on agriculture. The biggest share of the plant component in the diet of Arslantepe's inhabitants goes to cereals of which the most dominant is barley, followed by emmer and einkorn. Less numerous but still greatly present in the archaeobotanical assemblage are legumes, represented by peas, chickpeas, and vetches. Apart from many cultivated plants, some wild species were also collected and consumed at the settlement. Most of them belong to the rose family. In Arslantepe all the crops were thoroughly cleaned before storing which means that there was no need for conducting such activities on a daily basis before food preparation. For preparing meals they used grinding stones, mortars and pots, and for thermal processing, they used open hearths and ovens. Due to circumstances that created favorable conditions for the preservation of plant remains, a fire seizing the entire village, a lot of information was retained, giving invaluable data about the diet and the day-to-day activities of the Early Bronze Age communities in the Near East.

AB - This work focusses on plant remains from kitchens at the site of Arslantepe (Turkey) to address food processing and household economy throughout the Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. More than 100,000 seeds and fruits, mainly crop remains, have been considered. A similar family-based agriculture is postulated, with an increasing importance of barley as forage since the Bronze Age. Differences between common and elite contexts are reduced apart from the period of political centralization.

AB - Veluška Tumba is one of the eponymous sites in the Macedonian Neolithic. Widely known
for its specific material culture, it is becoming synonymous with the Neolithic in Pelagonija,
which is largely based on research in the 1970s, when the site came to the fore. In 2017, it was
re-explored, but with the application of new methods and technologies that will provide much
more information about the origin and development of this Neolithic settlement, as well as
the character of those who lived in it. In 2019, the research began with the application of the
Harris matrix, the study of finds by context, as well as archaeobotanical and geoarchaeological
analyzes. The project is a collaboration between the Center for Prehistory Research, Institute and
Museum – Bitola, the University of Basel and the Biosense Institute. During the field research, the
western profile was studied, made by the probe in the 1970s, which was refreshed and revised
from the bottom to the last layers. For that purpose, a small control trench was made which
provided insight into the earliest horizons of the settlement. Thus, 31 layers were registered
along with different features in them (sediments, mortar, cinder and glue) documented in 75
stratigraphic units, which provides detailed insight into all stratigraphic elements and consistent
reconstruction of architectural activities and changes in the field of material culture. According
to the detailed review of the stratigraphy, it can be concluded that the Neolithic settlement was
formed on a small natural sand mound, in which 12 levels of construction are registered. These
architectural features have been defined as constructions, although in some cases it may be the
restoration of existing buildings. Along with the archeological excavations, geoarchaeological
and archeobotanical analyzes were carried out which pointed to smaller settlements near
Veluška Tumba (or flooding of its periphery in the early stages), as well as consumption of wheat,
barley, peas, lentils, strawberries, hazelnuts, elderberries and wild millet by its inhabitants.
