Haunted Places in US Culture

AB - What makes a place haunted is the narrative of its ghosts: the curse of the place is expressed through the hauntings of that place by the ghosts of the people who died there. Ghosts are an expression of negative transgression, that is, a violation of social norms and cultural values that leads to the moral destabilization of the community: haunted places arc places of tragedy, of deaths caused by violence and negligence. The basic features of haunted places in the US are liminality, the historical experience of what happened there, and the fact that they represent the boundary between the everyday and the impossible. The crossing of the existential boundaries by ghosts is analogous to negative transgression in social behavior. The liminality of ghosts thus corresponds to the liminality of haunted places in spatial, existential, ontological and moral terms. They appear as a kind of propaedeutic device in cultural communication, for the atrocities of their stories address what is good and bad according to the norms of cultural thought, and what is proper and improper in social behavior. Several different types of places are featured in this discussion: private ones, like dwelling places, as well as numerous public places, including a public library, a quarry, a public park, a village lane, a teahouse, the site of one of the best-known battles in United States history, a former correction facility, a beech etc, across the entire country: Atchison, Kansas; New Orleans, Fort Leavenworth and plantations in Louisiana; Peoria, Illinois; Reelsville, Indiana; Little Bighorn, Montana; Washington DC; New York City; the San Francisco Bay area; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portage County, Wisconsin; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Forester, Michigan; Cape May, New Jersey; Tucson, Arizona; Mason, Ohio.

AB - Ovaj rad obuhvata i u jednu celinu povezuje urbanu antropologiju, metodologiju terenskog istraživanja i antropologiju obrazovanja.
AB - This text brings together few areas of anthropological interest, namely urban anthropology, fieldwork methodology, and anthropology of education. Its aim is to present the structure, dynamics and main results of an urban anthropology course as it was realized in the fall semester of the 2012-2013 school year. The course was devoted to the forced resettlement of the Roma population due to large infrastructure projects that were taking place in the vicinity of the two Belgrade bridges. Realization of this topic during the course entitled National Ethnology/Anthropology - City and Culture at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, represents the first in a sequence of students' research projects related to acute socio-cultural problems in the cities of Serbia. The course was realized through group research, which included twenty-three senior year students. The purpose of the project was to study the situation in which the Roma found themselves after resettlement. Investigation was focused on the period after dismantling of two informal Roma settlements in New Belgrade - one situated below the bridge "Gazelle", and the other beside "Belville", the modern residential block near which the access roads to the new "Ada Bridge" were to be constructed. Conclusions and discussion deal with analysis of pedagogical and research outcomes of this integrally conceived and empirically oriented course.

AB - Political mobilization consists of actions and their legitimization, which have both an activist and a legitimizing basis. The activist basis stems from the basic structure of the political system, which entails the principles of political organizing and action. The legitimizing basis has its roots in the basic political values and ideas which serve to legitimize the political system. In this paper I will analyze the legitimizing basis of the political mobilization of the Serbian opposition during the March protests in 1991.

Where the Civilization Ends Horror Begins: Cultural Shaping of Fear in Simmons' "Terror"`

AB - One of the most famous enterprises within the British search for the so-called Northwest Passage in the nineteenth century, the Franklin expedition, was described in the novel "Terror" (2007) by American writer Dan Simmons, as well as in the TV series based on the book (2018) of the same name. What the expedition became known for was its disappearance in the Arctic wastelands despite - for its time - the most modern technological equipment, as well as the fact that its command staff consisted of experienced researchers. Simmons' presentation of the circumstances that led to the collapse of the expedition was based, to a certain extent, on the scientific knowledge about it, collected from the first searches for the expedition to this day, but also on the cultural idea that was formed first in Great Britain, and then in Canada and the United States, during that time period. As the essence of cultural communication produced by the novel and the series, we see the inability of civilization as a source of fear - or horror - before the socially ontologically uncertain position that people are brought into, when they are displaced outside their original sociocultural context and find themselves in conditions in which norms of that context can be contrary to the measures that are taken for the sake of physical survival. This given fear is of cultural origin: its root is in a situationally generated idea that it is possible that the reality is different from the one which is being defined by the social order and cultural norms, namely the rules, that make our world known and subject to human control, are not fully applicable. The boundaries of this fear are permeable for those things which a person is not able to face successfully on the basis of his/her innate abilities and cultural development.

AB - This work explores the representation of the Yugoslav New Wave through the analysis of the documentary film "The New Wave in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a Social Movement". Although the New Wave covers many spheres of art, in this analysis we will investigate it as the musical and cultural phenomena. The theoretical frame within the analysis is based on the idea that a documentary film can help us understand a particular period as well as reinvestigate it, and (re)construct it from a new. The results from this analysis should be able to show how the narrative about the New Wave continues to live thirty, forty years later, as well as how it inspires to (re)create and appoint with every new film made.

The results from this analysis should be able to show how the narrative about the New Wave continues to live thirty, forty years later, as well as how it inspires to (re)create and appoint with every new film made.",

AB - American sociologist of Austrian origin, Peter L. Berger, is one of the most significant sociologists of religion in the 20ᵗʰ and 21ˢᵗ century. In this work I present, pursuant to my opinion and choice, the most important research issues Berger dealt with within the social construction of reality, religion, secularization, desecularization and religious pluralism. It was my aim to highlight, among other things, that which is common to Berger's sociological approach to religion and the anthropological researches. The basic idea, pointed out in the title of the work, the search for the sense and meaning of religion, is reviewed through examples of similarities and differences between Clifford Geertz and Berger. The category of "meaning" served as a key to understanding of culture, and even religion as a cultural system which transfers meaning.

AB - This work presents results of a wider empirical research of the issue of gender based violence and violence against women as a problem rooted in structural systems of the patriarchate and the ideology of gender inequality. The goal of the research that was carried out in the Correctional Facility for Women in Požarevac, is to reassess theoretical concepts of "structural violence", "cultural violence" and "patriarchal terrorism". Revised are gender and patriarchal ideology, which gives legitimacy to direct and structural violence in a manner that makes it acceptable and unrecognizable as violence. Systematic violence from a partner is rooted in the patriarchal tradition which gives men the right to control their women by using not only physical violence, but maybe even more present forms of violence, like: economic violence, emotional violence, isolation, threats and many other forms of control. Narratives of women who suffered violence and killed their bullying partners, reveal their perceptions of the problem and construct a certain reality in which they were living prior to their arrival in the prison. To stay in a prison is undoubtedly a special kind of experience, and the initial event is anew survived by the probationers and "processed" while they are trying to find sense in their new living circumstances of staying in the prison. Certain social constructs and discourses can be recognized, among other things, in their narratives.

AB - Papal Encyclicals to local bishops regarding matrimonial dispensation have not been used so far as historiographic and anthropological sources. In this paper, an attempt was made to verify their usability in that sense. Two Encyclicals from the Catholic Fond of the Birta Archives were separated and it was examined, through comparative analysis, to what extent these Encyclicals were useful for checking historical data about on which there are doubts, and to what extent they can offer new, not yet known and important information. Thereby of course, all limitations of such data and its adequate contextualization are taken into account. These are the Encyclicals in which the Pope urges local bishops to check the allegations in the request of the Naples nobles who want to marry, even though they are close relatives. Since other original documents on the studied topic are currently unavailable, and the material has not been sorted, integrated and published in the print form, the scope of the Papal Encyclicals as sources was checked by comparing it with publicly available digitized databases and internet presentations and encyclopedias.

AB - Three aspects of cultural communication of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" book series are discussed in this paper: a literary tradition, a literary genre, and a cultural message. Narrative motives are established as a mean of connection of this book series with some of the classic works of English and European literature, and the whole series is fashioned according to the literary form of the (folk or fairy) tale. The purpose of this is to refer to the idea that a given book series should be viewed as part of English literature and of the English literary tradition. The tale form is used as a mean of categorizing the literary form within a given literary tradition. The third aspect in which the series communicates is the social context in which it was created, and it establishes parallels between states of social stability and instability, order and chaos, wholeness and breakup in the two basic worlds in which the series' action takes place: in our world and in that of the principle protagonist. It aims to emphasize the responsibility of the individual for the functioning of society, since society represents a consensual community of individuals.

AB - New Belgrade is the city municipality divided from the “old town” of Belgrade by the Sava river, and one of the economically fastest developing parts of the city. Despite its recent commercial growth, New Belgrade is commonly perceived - especially by non-inhabitants - as a geographically and even (sub)culturally distinct part of the city, because of its prevailing social realist architecture, confusing subdivision into city blocks, and os- tensive ghetto-like neighbourhoods. This exclusivist perception is internally reinforced by certain hip-hop artists who sing about New Belgrade in a local patriot, identity-boosted manner. In this presentation, we will explore how the music appears to construct the identity of a place by analyzing the representations of New Belgrade’s city “blocks” (as spaces inducing certain strong sentiments, such as brotherhood, devotion, loyalty, attachment...) in contemporary hip- hop musical production. Music in this paper is perceived as an element of culture which communicates, shapes and expresses identities, which is why
we will not take into account its musicological aspects or aesthetical qualities. Our primary research method will be qualitative: we will conduct the interviews with the musicians, as well as residents and non-residents of New Belgrade in order to identify different perspectives of this area of the city. Also, we will analyze a selection of songs and video clips which tend to create ossified, exclusivist and emotionally charged auto-representations of this part of Belgrade.

AB - New Belgrade is the Belgrade City municipality separated from the “Old
City” of Belgrade by the Sava River, and is one of the parts of the city characterized by a
pronounced growth both economically (a large number of companies, shopping malls)
and demographically (the continuous growth of new residential blocks and inhabiting
of the same) in the last ten years or so. Yet, the first associations with New Belgrade
are its characteristic social-realistic architecture (concrete buildings), a high population
density, and a confusing subdivision into city blocks similar to the concept of American
ghetto-like neighborhoods. The focus of our research presented herein is the analysis
of the images of New Belgrade which are possible to find in the songs of hip-hop musicians from New Belgrade. Our basic starting thesis implies that music constructs the
identity of a specific space or place, for which reason, in our approach, we are emphasizing its fundamental feature – communicativeness, and therefore it is not perceived
from a musicological or aesthetical perspective. The primary research method we are
relying on is the qualitative one, based on the analysis of the selected texts of the hiphop songs in which a mention is made of New Belgrade and which New Belgrade in
presented in, based on which we endeavor to abstract a corpus of the meanings that are
attributed to this part of Belgrade.

AB - “The Chronicles of Vladimir” are six songs by the English rock band The
Stranglers. Most of them were recorded during the 1980s and they mock the life in the
totalitarian system of Soviet Communism. We consider them as an example of constructing heteropragmatic otherness with an aim of pointing out the misanthropy of
totalitarianism, where individualism as a social ontological stance is opposed to the
existing ways of human social and cultural organization in general.

Understanding, creation and listening to the music on YouTube website: The case of Viva Vox choir

AB - Listening to music nowadays is unthinkable without the YouTube Channel through which not only we can get to the desired sound, but also extend our music knowledge to virtual travels through space and time. Due to new technologies, it is possible to get into the music worlds of the sixties, eighties, nineties, and through the music from that period to revive the elapsed epoch, at least briefly. It is also possible to listen to Rock and Roll, classical music, hip hop, techno or any other type of sound that we define. Although YouTube is a website that allows people to show and watch any video clip (which does not have to be musical), much of the material is actually of a musical character, so this site as such will be analyzed in this paper. The idea behind this research is based on the hypothesis that YouTube, through its decade of existence, influenced the understanding, creation and listening to music, which I am trying to show through the analysis of the case study of the Belgrade choir Viva Vox. Namely, after one song uploaded on YouTube, the life of this choir has changed, wherefore the local choir has become a world famous phenomenon. I base my analysis on YouTube website primarily on his social dimension, which means that I consider this page as an important "place" of gathering, where people under their pseudonyms feel free to express their attitude about what they have heard, which in fact often reflects their relationship to evervday life.

AB - In this paper, the concept of locality is problematised through perceiving the relationship between the global and the local on the example of the new-wave music scene that developed in Yugoslavia at the beginning of the 1980s from the Slovenian perspective. Created initially in London and New York, punk and then new wave sparked the development of an authentic music scene in Yugoslavia. Singing in the local languages and dealing with local themes made these music genres a local musical and cultural phenomenon, which is the underlying thesis of this paper. The theoretical framework in which that thesis is considered is founded on understanding new wave as a cultural phenomenon and the observation of the correlation between the concepts of music and the place through the notion of the music scene. The analysis has shown that new wave can be considered to be a local music phenomenon because an authentic music scene existed during the 1980s, but also that, in that period, punk was present to a greater extent, so, according to the respondents' perception, it is a more significant local marker than new wave.

The Socio-ontological Solipsism in the Work of Philip K. Dick

AB - An important feature of the work of one of the most influential science fiction writers of the last century, Philip Kindred Dick, is the manifestation of different experiences of reality by one or more actors - creating an impression among readers that it is possible to speak of several different planes of existence within a single narratively given reference frame. Contrary to other authors who have dealt with this problem, we do not interpret them in terms of parallel or alternative ontologically equal realities, but as ontologically different existential sources, which will, through narrative resolution, in most of Dick's work, pour into one social plane. Without going into the literary and artistic aspects of the work, this analysis reveals its still unrecognized cultural message - socio-onto-logical solipsism, relevant to the understanding of not only the twentieth century but contemporary social utopias as well.

AB - The subject of work is a value relationship that is established towards the society in the books of the prophet of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and Malachi. Their attitude toward the current state of social organization of the Jewish people is negative. They see the social and cultural life as morally bad, where the roots of that evil are in deviation from God's laws given to Moses, and its manifestations are all of those actions that, from an eschatological perspective, lead to punishment, not salvation. We call this relationship a misanthropic one, since it is not a simple view of society as morally distorted, but such distortion is set in a kind of teleological perspective, in which it turns out that given sociability for the prophets is a systematically organized way of human existence contrary to the basic interests of man - life in in accordance with God's laws for salvation.

AB - The notion of "music" should be viewed as a svnesthetic concept: impressions about it arc not transmitted exclusively through the sense of hearing, but also to the visual perception. The effect of music can be seen as intellectual and emotional, as a relation towards the played or pronounced at the lyrics, but also towards the very appearance or performance of the musicians, to the musical piece performing and so on. In other words, we do not only communicate by playing and listening to music, but also understanding it in terms of cultural and social phenomenon. Those who use the concept of music understood in such away even do not have to be musicians, because socially and culturally understandable and relevant messages can be transmitted through the simple broadcasting of a certain music audio or video recordings, or by taking a stand towards some musical piece. Music represents a medium to expression of a sociocultural otherness in Western civilization, at least from the Middle Agcs, but also represents a way of producing that otherness. By producing of otherness, we mean discovered, namely, conscious and intended individual acts to the use of music as a synesthetic concept for the purpose of transmitting a cultural message about a certain kind of otherness in a given sociocultural context, and which, for immediate reference, takes the sender of such a message. Our aim is to present a mechanism of that producing of otherness in such a way, by considering examples to different types of musical pieces (Rock and Roll, film music, classical music, etc.), different types of otherness (ontological, political, ethnical, etc.) and different sociocultural contexts from closer and further past, as well as from the present.

Therefore, an attempt has been made in this paper to highlight this problem from the position of the mentioned discipline. The change in the manner of Krashovani declaring through history was analyzed, but also the process of constructing their contemporary identity formula at the institutional level, as well as the application and development of identities at the interactive and individual level. In addition to field research, conducted in 2015 and 2016 in Carasova, the material was collected through review of media reports, as well as observing Facebook's accounts.

An Essay on the film "Enclave" by Goran Radovanovic: what we experience and what we remember thinking about the watching of a contemporary historical cinematographic work

AB - The essay uses elements of anthropological (Steven Caton and Marc Auge), cinematographic (David Bordwell), philosophical (Stanley Cavell and William Rothman) and historiographical approaches to studying film (Robert Rosenstone) in order to develop a suitable framework for an encompassing anthropology of one specific film - Enclave (2015, 92 mins) by Goran Radovanovic. The aim is to achieve a more complete understanding of the author's actions through which the logic of this "contemporary historical film", a film that deals with, history which is still ongoing" practically influences the viewers of the film. Specifically, the paper attempts a precise uncovering of the way in which Radovanovic's audio-visual story of the painstaking rise of a friendship between an Albanian and a Serbian boy in an enclave in Kosovo struggles with, resists, but simultaneously blends with the knowledge, expectations and memories carried by those who had the opportunity to view the film, including, foremost, the author of this essay. In a nutshell, the key question addressed by the essay is how, or rather, why certain films become meaningful in the lives of those who watched them, or, as Stanley Cavell would put it, what are the reasons of one's own (or anyone else's) understanding of a specific film, such as it is?

U svim verzijama Velikog brata („obični“ i VIP), okosnicu rija-liti programa čine dva elementa: fenomen nadzora i princip komercijalnosti programa.
AB - The reality show “Big Brother” represents a metaphor for the transformation
of contemporary media toward its commercialization and the primate which is
given to entertainment as opposed to classic informative and educational content, which, in Serbia, takes place in the context of post-socialist transformation.
The hyper commercialized character of “Big Brother” is the product of a new
guiding idea in the media sphere, which is to measure success only on the criteria of ratings. In all versions of “Big Brother” (the “ordinary” as well as VIP),
the framework of the reality show is made up of two elements: the phenomenon
of surveillance and the commercial principle of the programme. In this paper
we wanted to take these two themes – surveillance and commercialization – and
connect them through the concepts of the “panopticon”/”synopticon” and “ratings”. In the analysis and discussion we will show that the newfangled criteria
of “ratings” is directly dependent on the situation in which the viewers of the reality format find themselves, situations in which “many view and decide on the
fate of the few”. We will analyze the ways in which the very production of the
reality show is geared toward influencing the ratings, through interventions and
the direction done by the production team, but also the reception of the show in
specialized forums. In the second case, a netography of the reception of VIP BB
2013 was undertaken, taking into account the discussions in the forum and the
monitoring of YouTube videos. Based on this, we singled out the most viewed
moments in the reality show, and considered the reasons why certain events and/
or actors who participated in them garnered special attention among viewers,
thus increasing the ratings of the show, but also multiplicating the commercial
effect through the participation of viewers through different media platforms
(websites, forums, online votes etc.)

AB - Serbian ethnology and anthropology is missing papers on folk belief and magic practices on black and white magic. This paper problematizes research on Vlach magic as an authentic and archaic culture of the ethnic Vlachs in North-Eastern Serbia. The first part of the paper deals with theoretical concepts of magic, while the second presents the results of research on the relationship between young people in Bor towards Vlach magic, as part of traditional folk religion and archaic cultural heritage which is still relevant today.
