Arnold Bocklin and the Reception of his Art in the Nova iskra Journal in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries

Abstract

It wasn't until the end of the 19th century that the work of Arnold Bocklin was recognized in the Serbian social milieu. The contact between Serbian and South Slavic painters established during the last decades of the 19th century in Munich wasn't enough to make the local artistic and cultural public fully acquainted with Bocklin's opus. The initial steps in acknowledging Bocklin's artistic opus are to be recognized in the sporadic critical reviews of Bozidar Nikolajevic, Vladimir Petkovic and Nadezda Petrovic from the early 20th century. Yet, the first comprehensive review was published in the Nova iskra journal in 1901 immediately after the painter's death when Jova Adamovic made a biographical necrologue, introducing the Serbian social environment with basics from the painter's life and with his chosen paintings. At the core of this narrative was the thesis about the genius artist and his unjustified marginalization in the public sphere. The artist's specialty was finally recognized, and his concepts of emotional landscape and pseudo-mythological genre were confirmed as a universal value. Having introduced Bocklin into the Serbian environment, Nova iskra journal, accordingly, had published six of his paintings in the period from 1899 to 1906. Finally, the artist was renowned as a leader of modern tendencies, and his paintings were to reflect the mental and emotional moods of the composite man of the last decades of the 19th century. The actuality of the contemporary critical reviews of the opus of Arnold Bocklin was confirmed by a comparative analysis with contemporary interpretations of the artist's opus that had further proved responsiveness of the critical thinking circles in Serbia at the break of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Дело Арнолда Беклина до пред крај XIX века није било довољно познато у српској средини. Контакт српских и јужнословенских сликара са делом знаменитог сликара током последњих деценија XIX века у Минхену нису били довољни да би се домаћа уметничка и културна јавност у целости упознала са Беклиновим опусом. Први кораци у препознавању Беклиновог ликовног опуса виде се у сегментарним критичким освртима Божидара Николајевића, Владимира Петковића и Надежде Петровић с почетка XX века. Но, први свеобухватни осврт дат је у листу Нова искра 1901. године. Јован Адамовић је непосредно након сликареве смрти у форми биографског некролога упознао српску средину са основним цртама из сликаревог живота и његовим одабраним сликама. У сржи наратива нашла се теза о генијалном уметнику и његовој неоправданој скрајнутости у јавном простору. Уметникова посебност је на крају препозната, и његови концепти емоционалног пејзажа и псеудомитолошког жанра су верификовани као универзална вредност. У складу са увођењем Беклина у српску средину, у Новој искри је у периоду од 1899. до 1906. године приказано шест уметникових слика. Коначно, уметник је препознат као носилац модерних струјања, а његове слике су постале носиоци душевних и емоционалних расположења композитног човека последњих деценија XIX века. Актуелност оновремених критичких осврта на дело Арнолда Беклина потврђена је компаративном провером са данашњим тумачењем сликаревог опуса.
