Писмо српских калуђера Дамјана и Павла папи Клименту VIII с краја XVI века

Abstract

Писмо милешевских калуђера Дамјана и Павла упућено папи Клименту VIII, данас у поседу Ватиканског апостолског архива, није сасвим непознато стручној јавности. У историографским радовима његови подаци коришћени су фрагментарно, док су целовитост садржаја и контекст настанка занемаривани. Писмо представља прворазредни извор за сагледавање политичких, друштвених и привредних прилика на простору средњовековних српских земаља у време Дугог рата (1593–1606). Поред тога, велики део текста чини својеврсна хроника српских средњовековних владара, те би овај одељак требало убројити у изворе значаjне за проучавање односа српске јерархије с краја XVI века према средњовековној прошлости. У овом раду писмо доносимо у целости, у оригиналу и преводу на савремени српски језик, као и у оновременом преводу на италијански, уз критичку анализу његовог садржаја и форме и уз осврт на околности под којима је састављено и представљено Апостолској столици.

The letter of Mileševa monks Damjan and Pavle which was sent to Pope Clement VIII, that is now kept in the Vatican Apostolic Archive in Fondo Borghese is not entirely unknown to the expert public. Works of various historians studying XVI and XVII centuries have used its segments referring to the rising of Duke Grdan in 1596, while two medievalists, academics Sima Ćirković and Jovanka Kalić, have noted details about coronation churches of the Serbian medieval rulers. The letter is a significant source for weighing the political, societal, and economical circumstances in the geographical space that was core of the Serbian medieval state during the first years of the Long War between Austria and the Ottoman Empire (1593–1606). A large part of the text is a Short chronicle of Serbian medieval rulers, which informs us of the views of the Serbian clergy at the end of XVI century about medieval past. This paper covers an original handwritten letter in Serbian Cyrillic lettering and its translation into Italian which is also kept in the Fondo Borghese, as well as its translation into modern Serbian. We have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the form and the content of the document and have established that it belongs to the category of litterae with elements of suppliche. The letter is not dated, but following the correspondence of friar Tomas Ursini with cardinal Cinzio Aldobrandini and that of Pope Clement VIII with Serbian Patriarch Jovan II Kantul, we have established that it was most probably written towards the end of summer 1597, and that the two emissaries, Mileševa monks Damjan and Pavle, headed to Rome via Dubrovnik at the start of September the same year. And finally, we offer a view of the political circumstances under which the mission of these two Serbian monks was undertaken.
