The paper deals with the analysis of demographic changes in the villages of the Bugarmoravska kapetanija / srez (second–level administrative unit in the Principality of Serbia). It was written primarily on the basis of the data provided by the types of tax lists called tefters, from 1833 and 1836, and the protocol of taxpayers from 1837. The most important of the three mentioned sources is the first one, because it is not just a fiscal document. It contains a list of almost the entire male population in the listed area, with data on the age of each of them and their ability to serve in the army. The paper was written primarily on the basis of unpublished archival material and to a lesser extent sources and literature. Fiscal lists from the beginning of the 19th century, due to their character and shortcomings, were rarely used in historiography as a source for studying demographic changes. But in the case of the Bugar – Morava County they demonstrate how this area experienced very turb...ulent demographic processes after joining the Principality of Serbia during the 1830s. Fiscal list as sources indicate that many extended families (zadruga) split up and the population moved in and out of Ottoman Empire. Also, there are several cases of local migration from village to village. A considerable number of recorded nicknames given by the geographical origin, suggest that the area of southern Pomoravlje, Toplica and Ponišavlje was the first refuge for Serb emigrants from the south before and after it was annexed to Serbia. The simultaneous increase and decrease in the number of houses could therefore be interpreted as the possibility that as a border, this area represented a transitional zone on the path of migration from south to north.
