Bosnia and Herzegovina is located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. In the politico-geographic
sense, that part of the peninsula has been called the
Western Balkans since the 1990s, including Albania and
all former Yugoslav countries, except Slovenia. Bosnia
and Herzegovina consists of two political entities, the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika
Srpska, and one district (Brčko District) that are legally
and internationally recognized by the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This document was signed at the Wright-Patterson Air
Force Base on November 21, 1995, ending the war that
started in April 1992. In addition to this official division
of the country, lower levels of government are also present, such as cantons, cities, and municipalities in the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and cities and
municipalities in Republika Srpska.
