Photography in the Service of Identity Visualization of Vela Nigrinova
Abstract
Vela Nigrinova, the famous tragedienne of the National Theater in Belgrade,
marked the media space of the Serbian capital at the end of the 19th century.
For this purpose, the medium of photography, which served the actress to
promote her carefully staged artificial image, was particularly prominent. The
actress created her appearance via varying her identity which was to be found
somewhere in between social construction and the inalienable autonomy of
personality. Set in the space between the normed image and her own projection,
Vela Nigrinova staged her manifold identities in various theatrical roles.
Numerous preserved photographs point to the multilayered character of the
actress, through which she managed to create the image of the undisputed
diva of the Serbian theater at the end of the 19th century. The actress’ photos
are interpreted as a consequence of her being set in a world of ideological
aestheticism in order to maintain gender differentiation. At the same time..., Vela’s
images were distributed in the context of manifesting women’s power, as a
product of a world in which beauty was considered an absolute category. Vela’s
photographs, beautiful on their own, were the cause and effect of the aesthetic
world of the bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century. Finally, her identities
confirmed the actress‘ status as a national heroine in an era of all-encompassing
modernization, decadence, and persistence of the established civic ideals.
