AB - One of the most important determinants of patients’ adherence to the treatment is the quality of the physician-patient relationship. Studies show that overall positive communication with healthcare workers positively affects treatment adherence and the other desirable patients’ behaviors. Therefore, positive experiences of physician-patient interaction increase the frequency of normative behaviors. In this study, we examined the relationship between experiences of physician-patient communication and the normalization of passivity (i.e. submissiveness and subservience) during childbirth. Thus, if this relation is positive, i.e., if communication quality is positively related to passivity normalization, that would confirm that passivity during labor IS a normative behavior.
A total of 271 women (Mage = 42.4) who gave birth were recruited. They completed 24 items regarding the frequency of physician-patient communication experiences (100-point slider scale). Promax-rotated principal component analysis revealed three dimensions of experience: 1. Aggressiveness (15 items, e.g., When I am at a healthcare facility, it happens that employees threaten patients; α = .88), 2. Supportiveness (six items, e.g., When I am at a healthcare facility, it happens that employees sympathize with me; α = .78), and 3. Shaming for not having children yet (three items, e.g., When I am at a healthcare facility, it happens that employees shame me for not having children yet; α = .85). They also completed seven items that capture normalization of passivity during childbirth (e.g., Women exaggerate their childbirth experiences; α = .73; 5-point Likert scale). Both scales were constructed for the purpose of this study.
Multiple linear regression model revealed that communication experience dimensions explained 21% of the variance of passivity normalization (F(3, 268) = 19.54, p < .000, R2adj = .21). More precisely, passivity normalization was positively predicted by Supportiveness (β = .27, t(268) = 4.27, p < .001), and negatively by Aggressiveness (β = -.24, t(268) = -3.18, p = .002). Shaming did not significantly contribute to the model (β = -.03, t(268) = -.37, p = .712).
Our results indicate that the more positive physician-patient communication, the higher passivity normalization is. This pattern suggests that positive experiences tend to silence women in that they do not critically re-examine old-fashioned and strongly established practices that define a birthing woman as a fully inactive agent. However, positive communication experiences are not passivizing per se - it is rather the social system that reinforces passivity during childbirth as a norm. In other words, mental representation of the passive female body seems to be internalized by both patients and health care providers. In that realm experiences of supportive and unaggressive communication can be abused, rather than used in a positive way to make the physician-patient relationship beneficial for both sides.

AB - Trust in physicians and health care system is paramount to delivering quality healthcare and crucial for maintaining favorable physician-patient relationship. There are multiple models of physician-patient relationship that differ by patients’ role in his/her health-related decisionmaking. Although legislation has changed towards deliberative model, in practice, the paternalistic model of relationship might still be widespread in Serbian healthcare system. If this is true, trust in physicians and healthcare system should be positively correlated to passivity normalization. Conversely, if the model that best describes real patient-physician relationship in Serbia is deliberative, trust should be negatively correlated to patients’ passivity normalization. Women who gave birth at least once (N = 274, Mage = 42.4) completed two sets of items: (a) 24 about their relationship with physicians and attitudes toward healthcare system in general, and (b) seven regarding normalization of passivity during childbirth. Canonical correlational analysis on the two sets of items revealed two significant pairs of canonical functions. The first pair (Rho = .62, χ2 (168) = 316.73, p < .001) captured the positive relation between trust in physicians (13 items, e.g., I believe that physicians and healthcare workers care about me as a person) and all seven items from passivity normalization set. Here, trust in physicians explained 12.6% of the variance of passivity normalization. The second pair of functions (Rho = .48, χ2 (138) = 192.71, p = .001) pointed to the negative relation between trust in public healthcare system (5 items, e.g. If I could afford it, I would always choose a private hospital) and three items from passivity normalization set that indicate full submissiveness during childbirth (e.g., During a childbirth, a woman must do whatever the physician tells her). This function accounted for only 2.9% of the variance. Our results indicate that trust in healthcare providers and system reflects on women’s passivity normalization, that is – paternalistic physician-patient relationship is present, accepted and supported by patients. This is reflected in positive relation between trust in physicians and passivity normalization. However, negative relation between trust in public healthcare system and full submissiveness during childbirth indicates that, alongside the existing paternalistic model, there is slight but far from comprehensive shift to the deliberative model.

AB - The present study is couched within Rachman's three-pathway theory of fear acquisition (Rachman, 1977, 1991). Besides the direct contact with the objects of fear, this model also includes two indirect pathways to fear acquisition: negative information transmission and modeling. The study aims to explore the contribution of these three factors to the level of children's fear of COVID-19. The sample consisted of 376 children (59.6% girls), aged 7-19 (M-age = 12.77, SDage = 3.57), and one of their parents (M-age = 42.88, SDage = 6.00). The survey was conducted online during the COVID-19 national state of emergency in the Republic of Serbia. The children assessed their fear of COVID-19, general fearfulness, negative information transmission, and modeling by their parents, as well as the level of exposure to negative information outside their home. The parents assessed their own fear of COVID-19 and trait anxiety. Parents' anxiety, children's age, and children's general fearfulness were used as covariates. The results of our path analysis provide support for Rachman's notion of indirect pathways. The more the parents were afraid of COVID-19, the more they expressed this (either verbally or through their behavior), which in turn led to an increase in the children's fear of COVID-19. Furthermore, children's exposure to negative information related to COVID-19, provided by their teachers and peers or stemming from the media, directly contributed to the level of children's fear. The results of the study emphasize the importance of caregivers' behavior during global health crises and provide some clues as to what caregivers may do to protect their children's mental health in such circumstances.

AB - The aim of our study was to explore relations between parents' and children's fear of COVID-19, parents' dispositions (emotion regulation, self-efficacy, the anxiety trait) and their distress (due to the pandemic, the national state of emergency [NSE] and curfews) and how these variables have been affecting the quality of parental pandemic practices during the COVID-19 NSE in Serbia. Our online questionnaire was filled in by 376 parents and one of their children aged 7 to 19 years. Path analysis was used to analyze data. Higher levels of cognitive reappraisal and self-efficacy directly contribute to a higher quality of parental pandemic practices during NSE. Indirectly, parents' fear, pandemic distress, and parents' cognitive anxiety symptoms increase children's fear, consequently raising the quality of parental pandemic practices. Pointing out protective and risk factors that may affect pandemic parenting during NSE as well as mechanisms of their contributions, our findings draw attention to the importance of parents' negative emotions regulation and the effects of children's emotions on the quality of parental pandemic practices during an ongoing pandemic.

Ukazujući kako na protektivne, tako i na faktore rizika koji mogu delovati na roditeljstvo tokom pandemije i vanrednog stanja, kao i na mehanizme njihovog delovanja, naši nalazi ukazuju na važnost sposobnosti roditelja da upravljaju negativnim emocijama i efekat koji strah dece može imati na kvalitet specifičnih roditeljskih praksi koje se odnose na pandemiju., The aim of our study was to explore relations between parents' and children's fear of COVID-19, parents' dispositions (emotion regulation, self-efficacy, the anxiety trait) and their distress (due to the pandemic, the national state of emergency [NSE] and curfews) and how these variables have been affecting the quality of parental pandemic practices during the COVID-19 NSE in Serbia. Pointing out protective and risk factors that may affect pandemic parenting during NSE as well as mechanisms of their contributions, our findings draw attention to the importance of parents' negative emotions regulation and the effects of children's emotions on the quality of parental pandemic practices during an ongoing pandemic.",

AB - The aim of this study was to construct, evaluate psychometrically and validate the Multifaceted Inventory for the Self-Report of Psychopathy (MISP). The pilot version consisted of 100 items arranged in 10 indicators related to affective, behavioral and interpersonal deficits. After dropping items that didn't have satisfactory psychometric characteristics in the pilot study, 50 items were left. The validation study was conducted on 232 high school students (51,7 % females), age 18 to 19. After dropping more items, final version of the instrument consists of 40 items. The construct validity was examined through factor analysis. 6 factors were extracted and all of these factors have good metric characteristics. Factors were named: manipulation, grandiosity, superficial relationships, violence, disinhibition and insensibility. Also, construct validity is shown by correlations with inventory for psychopathy self-report SRP-III. Convergent validity is confirmed by association with macchiavelism test MACH-IV and personality test HEXACO. MISP also has diagnostic validity, because men on all factors other than Disinhibition have higher scores than women. The Multifaceted Inventory for the Self-Report of Psychopathy (MISP) meets the criteria of a valid test that could be used as an instrument for assessing psychopathic traits in the Serbian speaking area, with the necessary validation on the sample of adults from the general population and correctional institutions.
