AB - Background: There is substantial empirical evidence that negative mood triggers smoking behavior, and less support for the similar effect of positive mood. However, the relationship between the intensity of mood and smoking remains relatively under-researched. Objectives: The present study explored the association between mood intensity and smoking behavior. Methods: Seventy-three ad libitum smokers recorded their mood and concurrent number of smoked cigarettes three times daily for one week using electronic diary application. Real time assessment in natural environment enabled greater reliability, validity and generalizability of the collected data. Results: We analyzed results using withinsubjects approach and obtained significant growth trend in smoking behavior that concurred with the increase of mood intensity-smokers tended to increase their consumption of cigarettes when they were feeling either happy or sad in comparison to the situation when they were in neutral mood. Importance: These findings raise implications regarding the role of mood intensity in initiating smoking behavior.

AB - Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to test if our eating behavior is determined not only by conscious evaluations of certain foods (explicit attitudes), but also by their automatic evaluations (implicit attitudes). Design/methodology/approach - In two studies, the authors examined the predictive and incremental validity of these two types of attitudinal measures of eating behavior. Implicit attitudes were assessed with a standard implicit attitude test procedure (target categories were "sweets" and "fruit," and attribute categories were "good" and "bad"); two explicit attitude measures were assessed: an explicit measure of preference for sweets over fruit and a semantic differential measure. The behavioral measure in Study 1 was the quantity of sweets consumed; in Study 2, it was a relative measure of sweets vs fruit consumption registered through a three-day diary. Findings - The relatively low correlation between implicit and explicit attitude measures indicated that these measures at least partially tap into different processes. Implicit attitudes proved to be superior over explicit attitudes in predicting food consumption, especially for consumption registered via diary. This fact suggests that implicit attitudes are powerful drivers of long-term behavior. Practical implications - The findings could be useful in tailoring interventions to promote healthier eating habits. Originality/value - The research tested predictive power of implicit food-related attitudes. It compared the food consumption in laboratory and real-life settings. A new measure for daily food consumption was developed and it was calculated relative to recommended serving size.

AB - This study explores the relationship between "Big Five" personality dimensions and implicit prejudice towards two groups: (1) homosexuals and (2) elderly people. We employed the NEO Pl-R personality inventory to register basic personality dimensions, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure implicit prejudice, and a semantic differential and the Fraboni scale to assess explicit prejudice. Results of the correlation and multiple regression analyses indicated that implicit prejudice toward homosexuals was related to Openness to Experience, while implicit ageism was related to Agreeableness. More precisely, people who obtained lower scores on these personality dimensions were more likely to hold implicit prejudice towards members of these stigmatized groups. We demonstrated that the relationship between personality and implicit prejudice could not be reduced to the relationship of personality traits with the explicit measures of prejudice. We compared these findings with the previously obtained pattern of results for explicit prejudice measures and discussed their implications for a theoretical distinction between implicit and explicit prejudice constructs.

AB - As we belong to a host of groups, we have a multitude of social identities that are interdependent. Social identity complexity refers to the degree of overlap between cross-cutting group memberships while social identity inclusiveness to the range of people a person identifies with through shared group membership. In this paper, we explored the relationship between the complexity and inclusiveness of social identity, and feelings toward ethnic/religious in-groups, as well as feelings toward out-group members. The research was conducted in two cities in Serbia: Belgrade and Novi Pazar (N = 178; average age 23), allowing for comparisons between young Serbs and Bosniaks, who belonged to the groups with a recent history of conflict. We found that social identity complexity was unrelated, whilst social identity inclusiveness was systematically and positively related to more positive feelings toward religious and ethnic out-groups. This effect was significant across different ethnic groups (Serbs and Bosniaks) and local contexts (Belgrade and Novi Pazar). Both social identity complexity and inclusiveness were unrelated to emotions toward members of the own group. We related these results with the existing data on the social identity structure and intergroup relations, and discussed the importance of inclusive identities for building tolerant societies.

AB - We employed the Brief Implicit Association Test (a recently developed short version of IAT) to measure implicit political attitudes toward four political parties running for Serbian parliament. To test its criterion validity, we measured voting intention and actual voting behavior. In addition, we introduced political involvement as a potential moderator of the BIAT's predictive and incremental validity. The BIAT demonstrated good internal and predictive validity, but lacked incremental validity over self-report measures. Predictive power of the BIAT was moderated by political involvement - the BIAT scores were stronger predictors of voting intention and behavior among voters highly involved in politics.

AB - This study employed the Implicit Association Test (IAT) with aim to examine the nature of automatic aesthetic judgment. The main hypothesis was that basic hedonic tone of artwork is one of important factors influencing automatic aesthetic evaluation. We conducted two experiments in which we varied hedonic valence of paintings of figural (Experiment 1) and abstract art (Experiment 2), measured participants' implicit association between these paintings and evaluative attribute dimension via IAT and registered their explicit judgments of paintings' hedonic tone. In both experiments we found that participants were significantly faster in those dual-categorization tasks in the IAT where preselected hedonically 'positive' paintings were paired with the positive attributes and hedonically 'negative' ones with the negative attributes than the other way around. We additionally found that explicit assessments of the hedonic tone were substantially related to the individual IAT effects in the case of abstract art, but not in the case of figural art. Implications of these findings are discussed.

AB - This study explores the executive function of shifting and its relation to intelligence and personality constructs. We administered four different cognitive tasks that are presumed to be markers of shifting. The exploratory factor analysis yielded a one factor solution underlying these tasks. Significant correlations between this factor and measures of intelligence were found. In addition, the shifting factor showed a significant relation to neuroticism trait and the direction of this relation implied that greater neuroticism corresponded to greater shifting costs. Our findings are in contrast with the early conceptions of executive functions as completely unrelated to intelligence and also some contemporary research showing that shifting factor is unrelated to intelligence measures, but support the findings that shifting ability is correlated with Gf. More importantly results of our study shed new light on the nature of the trait neuroticism, implying that executive functions might play a significant role in determining people's general emotional vulnerability.

U poslednjoj fazi istraživanja, validirali smo instrument preko bihejvioralnih varijabli.
AB - The main goal of this study was to create an instrument for assessing tendency towards superstition-related beliefs and behavior and validate it in real life situations. Superstition was considered and analyzed as an attitude toward specific objects of the superstition. In the first part of the study, a sample of superstitious beliefs and behaviors was collected, after which the former list was reduced to 44 descriptions, based on the average familiarity. A preliminary version of the instrument was administered to 266 participants. The factor analysis suggested a presence of one main factor and three highly correlated sub-factors. In the last part of the study, in order to validate the instrument through behavioral variables, the final version of the instrument was administered to a different sample and subjects were put in two situations that challenged their potential superstitious behavior (passing below or going around a ladder in a computer laboratory; forward a chain e-mail for good luck). Group of participants that exhibited at least one superstitious behavior and the group of participants that did not, differed significantly in the average superstition score.
