AB - The development of the Internet and digital technologies has influenced the ever–greater migrations of printed content to the digital sphere (blogs, online media, Internet portals, social networks), which has also brought with itself changes in readers’ habits and in the concept and format of texts as wells. Music press is no exception in that respect. In the context of South European states, these processes coincide with the period of political, social, cultural and economic transition, giving rise to the development of numerous regional and local specific forms of popular culture. The existence of the SFRY as a shared state enabled the creation of an authentic cultural space, which continued to develop even after its disintegration. This paper endeavours to shed light one segment of that local authenticity through an analysis of music press. The aim the authors of this paper aspire to achieve is the presentation of the development path of the printed media in the first place in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, then in Serbia, as well as the reconstructions of the modality of the transformation of this media in the transition period from an anthropological perspective. The wish is to identify the perception and significance of music as a local cultural phenomenon through the qualitative analysis of the archival material and the available Internet sources as well, then to trace the cultural changes that have been going on over time as a result of global and local social and cultural turmoil. We do not refer to press only as the medium which has an informative role, but rather as the medium that reflects the local community’s attitudes, simultaneously constructing narratives on popular culture that are incorporated in our everyday life.

štampanog sadržaja u digitalnu sferu (blogovi, online mediji, internet portali,

u konceptu i formatu textova. Muzička štampa u tom pogledu nije izuzetak. U
regionalnih i lokalnih specifičnih oblika popularne kulture.
medija, pre svega u Socijalističkoj Federativnoj Republici Jugoslaviji, zatim u

AB - The task of the qualitative research done in work at one’s
old age, i.e. the work activities performed by the so-called
old-age pensioners in the Republic of Serbia, was to provide
the key information about the structural preconditions for
its performance, as well as about the respondents’ main
motives to replace the presupposed inactive sphere with
an active one. The given analysis was carried out through
the prism of the process of the population ageing that is
rated as crisis demographic movement lasting for a longer
period of time based on the results obtained through the
field research conducted in the period from 2020 to 2022
on the basis of a semi-structured interview made with 13
collocutors coming from four cities.
The following can be singled out as the most significant results of the research: first of all, the collocutors’ two dominant work strategies. The first implies the continuation of
their earlier educational and professional specializations
most often in the case of the better-educated respondents
who retired from higher job positions. Contrary to that, the
second requires a complete change in the activity within
which they earn money; they are mainly the collocutors
with a lower degree of education, who simultaneously also
belong to the category of the younger old. The research
study has confirmed that older participants on the labor
market may also work in legal settings which are easier to
monitor, and in the informal economic frameworks which
are only possible to assess.
The silver entrepreneurship also appears to be a specific
type of entrepreneurship. It is assessed as possessing a
potential – which has also been confirmed by the results
of the concrete research – but it must necessarily be
also supported systemically with the aim of achieving a
greater number of the benefits that, generally speaking,
arise from work in older age, which on their part include:
the improvement of the socioeconomic position, keeping
one’s vigor, retaining and expanding social relationships,
self-esteem, as well as the need to contribute to the welfare of (younger) household and/or family members. In this manner, some of the most important principles connected with the active ageing concept that,
amongst other things, also advocates prolonged staying in the active sphere of work, which on
its part needs to be perceived through the presence of the voluntariness of those performing
it, whereas on the other hand any compelling of anyone to work should be resolved through
adequate social protection measures, have been confirmed.
Not only are the obtained results indicative of the complexity of the topic and the significance
of studying and bringing into connection the two phenomena: work and ageing that only seemingly exclude each other, but they may also serve as a source for future research studies that
require an explicit interdisciplinary approach. As is shown, this is all the more so since the work
performed by society’s elderly population does not only exert an influence on their everyday
life, but it also has an influence on the lives of the members of their families and the society as
a whole where they are becoming older and work.

манифестација Jazz in the Garden.
AB - Based on the several decades-old tradition of presenting jazz through festivals
firstly in Yugoslavia, and consequently in Serbia, the Jazz in the Garden
manifestation was founded in Belgrade in 2021. The name of the new festival

the anthropological analysis of this manifestation, we will strive to demonstrate
how the manifestation in development like this one influences the construction
process of one part of Belgrade’s identity through its connections with the
local jazz scene. We will also consider the influence of the creation of different
perceptions and new meanings of the well-known city space like the Botanical
Garden “Jevremovac” in which the festival is held.

aims to point out the principal meanings which can be subsumed under the three
dominant problems faced by the protagonist Vesna when she finds herself in
situations that demand a reexamination of previously accepted norms regarding older members of contemporary Serbian society. The analytical procedure,
also applied to film, involved the construction and study of an ethnography
which consists of production, content and reception, with primary emphasis on
the first two elements. In this way, it was possible to distinguish several of the
more important themes that underpin the basic plot structure, which, very briefly, follows the everyday life of a sixty-year-old former pianist who, following
the death of her husband with whom she had an unhappy marriage, leaves for
California to visit her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Her relocation
from the environment in which she has spent her entire life has thus created the
conditions for her to embark on a new relationship with an elderly American
whom she met online, but also for the process of conflict with and resistance
to norms which have typically dictated to her, as a widow, certain emotions,
and actions in accordance with them, while challenging others. This process in
which her age is foregrounded in contrast to actions which are labelled “out of
time” and therefore inappropriate, even unacceptable for those closest to her,
also involves actions by opponents dressed up in the specific form of ageism
such as the so-called well-meaning ageism, when an older person is forced to
accept unwanted expressions of “concern” and “assistance”. Finally, a subsidiary but haunting motif is the motif of suicide of older members of society (in
the series committed by Vesna’s brother-in-law Jovan), which functions as a
reflection of easier acceptance and understanding by one’s community, unlike
the decision to continue life in a new, late-life relationship following the death
of a spouse. Finally, it should be observed that the attitudes, actions and censure
of the adult members of one’s family are dominant.

AB - Na osnovu obuhvatnijeg etnografskog istraživanja, koje kontinuirano traje
od 2020. godine, biće moguće podrobnije uputiti u pojedine aspekte poslovnog života starijih pripadnika društva tokom vanrednog stanja usled pojave epidemije kovid
– 19 u Srbiji.
tokovima, bilo u sivoj zoni – ostala izvan fokusa.
AB - Based upon the more comprehensive ethnographical research continuously
lasting since 2020 it will be possible to more thoroughly refer to some aspects of the
business life of the elderly members of society during the state of emergency due to
the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in Serbia. The frequently overlooked fact that
the large corpus of the so-called old – pensioners and/or people older than 65 years
of age who are not assigned this status – also accounts for a considerable share of the
labor-active elderly population has had multiple implications in the past period. On
the one hand, the unison voice was being heard directing the attention of the public
towards the elderly as those being threatened in multiple ways, additionally supporting the generally accepted perspective implying the old as the frail and unproductive
members of society, whereas on the other, the burden of the problem of those who
labor-engage themselves in order to earn their subsistence and the other important elements taking part in the preservation or improvement of the quality of the life of the
old – whether that work is done legally or in the grey zone – has remained out of focus.
Therefore, this contribution is turning into an effort to include the missing perspective
as well in the analyzed problems with the aim of emphasizing the fact that the so-called
help, especially when determined and given by decision-makers, has to be targeted so
as to be efficient.

trideset ispitanika različitih radnih pozicija, poslovnih orijentacija i dužina karijera,
kontekst u kojem deluju domaća preduzeća i institucije u značajnijoj meri menja preduzetim
AB - Multiple processes in modern Serbia occurred at the end of the twentieth
and the beginning of the twenty first century. Almost all of them regard political,
economic, and social changes. Influences caused by these changes can be
seen in the social template across the spectrum of plans, encompassing various
spheres of life of individuals from business to private, all the way to the point
where this division, for many, is gradually disappearing. In that sense, this paper
will follow the most anthropologically interesting example of research, the one
that follows the influences of the undertaken reform processes and observed
changes. This is the example that regards the experience and evaluation of time
among employed inhabitants of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. The aim of this paper was to refer to the results of anthropological fieldwork conducted in 2005,
which focused on the experiences, strategies and expectations of employed Belgraders
in terms of their working hours and certain temporal boundaries that
characterize it. Due to the increasingly intensive business contacts with foreign
partners and colleagues since 2000, the working hours of employees were
analyzed in a narrower context, as they were on the long list of adjustments,
mostly to Western influences. These contacts were not only more frequent after
the period of the 1990s, which, among other things, is characterized by a
sudden break in cooperation with foreigners, but were often dictated by the EU
integration process, the increase of the private sector in which operated companies
were oriented towards profit, and the acceleration of time. The last aspect
was examined in 2005 through a sample comprising 30 interlocutors of various
business backgrounds. The ethnographic material was categorized and analyzed
with regard to the differentiation of respondents by age. Fifteen respondents
were chosen to represent the older generation (born in the 1940s and 1950s) and
as many the younger generation (born in the 1960s and 1980s). The blurring of
the boundaries between the employees’ business and private life in Belgrade
became more marked at the turn of the century, and it could be clearly stated
through the example of working time. Differences between the period of socialism
and the period of reforms since the 1990s relate also to a sense of insecurity
and fear of losing one’s job or having inadequate work, and the simultaneous
development of the private sector, which is characterized by stricter rules for
employees. More intensive was the influence of business on the private domain
of life, but also the intrusion of the private into business life. This has become

trideset ispitanika različitih radnih pozicija, poslovnih orijentacija i dužina karijera,
kontekst u kojem deluju domaća preduzeća i institucije u značajnijoj meri menja preduzetim
za strance imala uticaja na doživljaj apostrofiranog ubrzanja., Multiple processes in modern Serbia occurred at the end of the twentieth
and the beginning of the twenty first century.
This has become
a necessity and a pledge of individual functioning on both levels, which show
combined characteristics of acceleration through the increase of obligations., L’objectif de cet article a été de rendre compte des résultats d’une recherche

AB - Based on the results of anthropological fieldwork conducted in 2015 and 2016, the paper aims to review the employees’ experience regarding the process of the acceleration of time in the office of one multinational company in Belgrade. The scientific focus is placed on working hours and certain temporal boundaries that characterize it. The most significant outcome is that the experience of a given phenomenon is the result of the fact that time spent during the work increasingly pushes the private time of interlocutors to the point of complete usurpation. The process of the acceleration of time was analyzed at three levels based on the statements of fifty-six respondents. The methods used in this study were structured interviews, observation of daily activities and practices in the company’s office, participant observation, survey on the demographic and socio-economic profiles of the interlocutors, and a field diary. The first level involved an analysis of business hours esteem; the second one was oriented towards studying the process and period of employees’ adjustment to foreign colleagues; while the third level of analysis aimed to instruct employees’ relationship to working hours before and after the experience of working with foreign colleagues. This research design turned out to be the most appropriate if we keep in mind that the results of this study lean on the results of anthropological research from 2005, which aimed to review the experiences, strategies and expectations of 30 employed Belgraders of different work positions, work orientations and the length of careers in terms of working hours. Among these 30 respondents the blurring of the differences between business and private sphere of life has been detected due to the experience of working in a changed socio-economic and political context since 2000 and the beginning of the reform process within EU integration process, accompanied by the specific social acceleration. The continuation of these processes, with certain features that come as a result of another change in the country’s political climate in 2012, therefore, are the key pathways through which the phenomenon of the acceleration of time in the modern Serbian society was observed on the example of a specific work/business community. Consequently, the acceleration of the Serbian society during the second decade of the 21st century, on the example of employees in the office of one multinational company in Belgrade, showed that the experience of working hours and certain temporal boundaries that characterize it among employees is such that private time is almost completely usurped by work time. This can be read through working hours, which practically cease to have clearly defined temporal boundaries in life of most respondents. The performance of work tasks is placed in the service of merging the spheres of business and private life into one, within the working hours.

AB - The fieldwork conducted in Belgrade during the summer and autumn of 2017 was oriented towards jazz musicians, and their strategies of action, in gist, implied playing other popular music genres through compromise – function work. Such business tactics are a consequence of jazz musicians’ ever-insecure position, but strategic goals have changed over time with the nature of that insecurity. Going beyond the genre boundary first became a means of securing the profession itself after WWII due to (foreign-)political and ideological influences, whereas from the 1960s to date, it has been the economic guaranty of the survival of many jazz musicians. Playing folk music is one of the observed strategies analysed through a broader sociopolitical, socioeconomic. and professional context.

AB - The anthropological analysis of the film Stairless (2014) will encompass: shedding light on the most important data on the production of the film, a description of the diegesis with an analysis and fragmental reception of the film, as well as some of its effects. The specifics of this film, aside from the fact that it belongs to the category of TV movie, which has a rich tradition in Serbia, but a lesser attraction than commercial films, at least when it comes to scientific attention paid to it, is extrapolated from circumstances and the focus on an old person as the protagonist. From the way in which the illness of the retired professor of neuropsychiatry - Alzheimer's dementia - is presented, it was possible to display all the problems with which those who fall ill, as well as those who are affected by it, face. In the end, a lack of possibilities in a dead end street, puts the protagonist in a nursing home for the elderly, and makes the viewer face certain effects of the film - the fear of old age, but also dilemmas and norms which regulate the handling of this issue in contemporary Serbian society.

AB - The subject of this study is focused on new migration tendencies of retired guest workers. This paper represents one part of a study conducted during 2014 in eastern Serbia and Vienna regarding life strategies of retired labor migrants. In domestic (Serbian) social sciences this subject was neglected, but recently it has attracted global social scientific attention with an idea of interdisciplinary merge of migration and age studies. To the day, global literature has only covered retired migrant laborers return to their home countries, but recent studies show changes in migration tendencies of retired laborers of many different nationalities, who have spent their work age in Western Europe. These new migration patterns were called “oscillatory movement” or as a new, alternative “third option”. They are only a form of seasonal and circular migrations which present the most dominant fashion of modern migrant mobility in Europe. Therefore we wanted to see what is the situation with labor migrants from Serbia – do they return to Serbia once they retire or not, and what are their reasons for choosing to live on “two addresses”.

Gastarbeiters' old age: strategies of life choices among the migrant population of pensioners

AB - The focus of our research was on the old age life strategies of retired gastarbeiters. For labor migrants who went to work "temporarily" abroad, becoming pensioners opens up a slew of problematic issues about their social status in host countries. This is a topic which has been neglected in Serbian academia, and has recently attracted the attention of the global scientific community through the attempt to make an interdisciplinary connection between studies of migration and studies of age. So far, the literature on migrant-pensioners has mostly dealt with the topic of "returning" to the home country, however it became evident that a large number of migrants stays in host countries well into old age, hence the recent trend in Europe to consider the issue of their status, pensions and social welfare as well as other forms of support for this, still largely nationally, socially and economically marginalized population. We wanted to examine the situation with Serbian gastarbeiters - are they coming back to their homeland after retiring or not, how they value their old age and what life strategies do they adhere to in retirement.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present the results of research conducted as part of the, Ambivalent nostalgia in the cultural heritage of gastarbeiters" project of the Ethnological-anthropological society of Serbia. The research was conducted in Kucevo and Wienna in 2014. The research focused on older guest workers or gastarbeiters who are mostly in the status of disabled pensioners, and seniors whose family members work abroad. An important criterion for determining the gasterbeiter population was entering into the sphere of work in an active capacity, specified by the assumed, "temporality" in the country of work; the determination of, "seniority" is based on the criteria of exiting the active sphere of work. In this way a new kind of old person, a new kind of pensioner was formed - the foreign currency pensioner whose operating strategies are partly in the focus of this paper. Aside from these strategies, the paper analyzes the strategies employed by the family members of gastarbeiters facing the old age of their relatives who reside in their country of origin either permanently or on a semi-permanent basis; as well as the strategies which the Gerontological Society of Serbia tried to develop in cooperation with the former Ministry of Diaspora RS with the aim of attracting aging gastarbeiters to domestic nursing homes, as well as stimulating the diaspora to invest in such institutions in Serbia. In short, the life experiences and attitudes of 14 pensioners interviewed in Kucevo and Vienna on issues of old age, possible - or ongoing life in a nursing home, the differences and/or similarities between them and other old folks they encountered abroad or at home, as well as experiences with working with the aging gastarbeiter population shared by six employees in a private as well as a public nursing home in Kucevo, will be the object of analysis in this paper.

AB - Research was carried out in the period from 2011 to 2014 in six retirement homes in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. By analysing partner relationships entered into by occupants of retirement homes, research aims to answer the question about attitudes towards emotional and sexual life in old age. In addition, the paper also indicates specific strategies of action that result in improvements in the residents' quality of life, as well as facilitate work of the employees or ease the burden for the family members, while making the daily routine in the home more interesting for other residents.

AB - The paper represents an attempt to address the issue of ways in which the political potential of the retired population is constructed. This process can be divided into two distinct periods. The first started with the introduction of the multiparty system, when the political potential of pensioners was imbedded into the activities of the Socialist Party of Serbia which had been in power at the time. This indicates the failure of political parties of pensioners to construct the issue of retirees as a political, or broader social issue. The second period is characterized by the loss of influence of the SPS after the political changes of 2000, after which the Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) was formed, in 2005, as an independent political organization. This party, finally, succeeded in constructing the political potential of pensioners as a resource, but it did so with the help of coalition partners among which the regenerated SPS is a major one, a fact which means that the process of construction continues relentlessly. The construed resource, for the political activities of the party as well as for the oldest part of society or pensioners as potential voters, is one of the major indicators of old age as a social issue in the 'arena' it shares with other social issues.

The paper represents an attempt to address the issue of ways in which the political potential of the retired population is constructed. The construed resource, for the political activities of the party as well as for the oldest part of society or pensioners as potential voters, is one of the major indicators of old age as a social issue in the 'arena' it shares with other social issues.",

As was the case in the first study, the focus is on dominant societal attitudes toward old people and old age which were utilized in making the television commercials in question. This was accomplished through analyzing both the positive and the negative stereotypes used to convey meaning in the commercials which were analyzed, as well as through the analysis of the proportional representation of older characters in advertising. The commercials which were analyzed here were broadcasted during the second half of December 2012, January and the first half of February 2013.

AB - The objective of this doctoral dissertation was to offer answers to the question how old age has been constructed as a social problem on a national scale over the time span of nearly two centuries. Old age was analysed as a socio-cultural category largely dependent on totality of social, political, and economic developments in the Serbian society, but also on international influences that affected it as well. Old age, thus, is not a rigid, inflexible phenomenon, but an expression of continuing social arrangements and adjustments to a range of diverse factors. When considered in this manner, departure from old age as a biological category is a necessary prerequisite. That is why gerontology definition, setting the old age cut-off at 65, could not have been adopted for this research. Actually, it was the changes in defining old age as a socio-cultural category, as well as the causes and effects of the identified redefining in various fields of social life and during different periods, that were among the major subjects analysed here. To answer the question what influences steer constructing old age as a social problem in specific social groups, the method adopted was the process of deconstructing the process of constructing the given social problem. The method involved analysing the natural history model suggested by two social constructivists, Malcolm Spector and John Kitsuse. In short, the authors define social problems as a sequence of events, and not as static conditions, and therefore suggest the four-stage model, where each stage features specific dynamics or processes, different types of activities and dilemmas, where linear progression is not considered necessary. The mentioned model builds on the elaborated version of the original analytical model previously formulated by Herbert Blumer, and provides an opportunity to observe the construction process over a longer time period, which was indispensable with regard to the subject matter, i.e. constructing old age as a social problem. However, the process of constructing old age as a social problem did not involve just one single course of the construction process. A chronologically older process of constructing old age as a social problem involves introducing pension insurance, establishing a pension system, forming the pensioned off layer of the society, and spans to contemporary problems related to the analysed construct. The other course of the process, dependent to a degree on the former, was constructed through organised care and housing in old age, i.e. accommodation in old age homes. These two courses of the construction process were analysed separately since the initial sources for the process were essentially different. The first identified course belongs to labour sphere, starting from the more pronounced professionalization in 19th century and as an expression of the privilege accorded to civil servants, who were to receive lifelong allowance, i.e. pension, after their term of service. The other course, the sub-process of constructing old age as a social problem, originated from the imperative of dealing with a wider social problem of poverty after World War One. Unlike the formerly mentioned one, it originated in a form of providing assistance to deprived members of the society, which included the elderly as well...
