AB - The development of the Internet and digital technologies has influenced the ever–greater migrations of printed content to the digital sphere (blogs, online media, Internet portals, social networks), which has also brought with itself changes in readers’ habits and in the concept and format of texts as wells. Music press is no exception in that respect. In the context of South European states, these processes coincide with the period of political, social, cultural and economic transition, giving rise to the development of numerous regional and local specific forms of popular culture. The existence of the SFRY as a shared state enabled the creation of an authentic cultural space, which continued to develop even after its disintegration. This paper endeavours to shed light one segment of that local authenticity through an analysis of music press. The aim the authors of this paper aspire to achieve is the presentation of the development path of the printed media in the first place in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, then in Serbia, as well as the reconstructions of the modality of the transformation of this media in the transition period from an anthropological perspective. The wish is to identify the perception and significance of music as a local cultural phenomenon through the qualitative analysis of the archival material and the available Internet sources as well, then to trace the cultural changes that have been going on over time as a result of global and local social and cultural turmoil. zemljama Južne Evrope, ovi procesi se poklapaju sa periodom političkih, socijalnih, kulturnih i ekonomskih transformacija koje su dovele do razvoja brojnih
regionalnih i lokalnih specifičnih oblika popularne kulture.
medija, pre svega u Socijalističkoj Federativnoj Republici Jugoslaviji, zatim u

AB - The task of the qualitative research done in work at one’s
old age, i.e. the work activities performed by the so-called
old-age pensioners in the Republic of Serbia, was to provide
the key information about the structural preconditions for
its performance, as well as about the respondents’ main
motives to replace the presupposed inactive sphere with
an active one. The given analysis was carried out through
the prism of the process of the population ageing that is
rated as crisis demographic movement lasting for a longer
period of time based on the results obtained through the
field research conducted in the period from 2020 to 2022
on the basis of a semi-structured interview made with 13
collocutors coming from four cities.
The following can be singled out as the most significant results of the research: first of all, the collocutors’ two dominant work strategies. The first implies the continuation of
their earlier educational and professional specializations
most often in the case of the better-educated respondents
who retired from higher job positions. Contrary to that, the
second requires a complete change in the activity within
which they earn money; they are mainly the collocutors
with a lower degree of education, who simultaneously also
belong to the category of the younger old. The research
study has confirmed that older participants on the labor
market may also work in legal settings which are easier to
monitor, and in the informal economic frameworks which
are only possible to assess.
The silver entrepreneurship also appears to be a specific
type of entrepreneurship. It is assessed as possessing a
potential – which has also been confirmed by the results
of the concrete research – but it must necessarily be
also supported systemically with the aim of achieving a
greater number of the benefits that, generally speaking,
arise from work in older age, which on their part include:
the improvement of the socioeconomic position, keeping
one’s vigor, retaining and expanding social relationships,
self-esteem, as well as the need to contribute to the welfare of (younger) household and/or family members. In this manner, some of the most important principles connected with the active ageing concept that,
amongst other things, also advocates prolonged staying in the active sphere of work, which on
its part needs to be perceived through the presence of the voluntariness of those performing
it, whereas on the other hand any compelling of anyone to work should be resolved through
adequate social protection measures, have been confirmed.
Not only are the obtained results indicative of the complexity of the topic and the significance
of studying and bringing into connection the two phenomena: work and ageing that only seemingly exclude each other, but they may also serve as a source for future research studies that
require an explicit interdisciplinary approach. As is shown, this is all the more so since the work
performed by society’s elderly population does not only exert an influence on their everyday
life, but it also has an influence on the lives of the members of their families and the society as
a whole where they are becoming older and work.

манифестација Jazz in the Garden.
AB - Based on the several decades-old tradition of presenting jazz through festivals
firstly in Yugoslavia, and consequently in Serbia, the Jazz in the Garden
manifestation was founded in Belgrade in 2021. The name of the new festival
apostrophises the location of the event – “Jevremovac” Botanical Garden. With
the anthropological analysis of this manifestation, we will strive to demonstrate

AB - This paper deals with the social construction and representation of heroes and villains of the contemporary Serbian environmental movement. In the last few years, growing environmental problems have led to establishment of several informal environmental initiatives and organizations in Serbia. These local environmental initiatives and organizations with a strong social media presence are dedicated to raising environmental awareness among the general public and protesting against the privatization of natural resources and the opening of new factories and new mining sites, which inevitably lead to environmental pollution. Various practices of digital activism play a significant role in informing and mobilizing concerned citizens. Analytical data is collected from 2017 to 2022. on social networking platforms and consist of various expressive materials created and shared digitally. One of the primary themes that pervade numerous and genre-diverse units of digital protest folklore of eco-activism in Serbia is we : them dichotomy, i.e., people/folk vs. private investors and local politicians. For example, in internet memes and other pieces of photoshoplore, environmental activists are depicted as new folk heroes. At the same time, domestic and foreign private investors, politicians, and local authorities are perceived as the main culprits for a (potential) environmental disaster. The main objective of this paper is to explain these processes of heroization and villainization in the digital eco-activism practices in postsocialist Serbia. Also, this paper tries to point out the importance of visual communication, as well as the role of humor, satire, and parody in the creation of new folk heroes.

AB - This paper analysis the so-called “second wave” of Roma hip hop in Serbia
from the perspective of the anthropology of music. It is a repeated study (restudy) that, on the one hand, is aimed at verifying the results of ethnographic
research on the phenomenon of Roma hip hop in Serbia conducted in 2009, and
on the other hand, at mapping the similarities and differences between these
two waves of urban musical expression of Roma youth. As the findings of the
previous research show, the main characteristic of the first wave of Roma hip
hop in Serbia is that it was created “from above” – by a non-governmental organization. In short, Roma hip hop did not represent a spontaneous, grassroots, and
independent expression but was institutionally supported and, therefore, of the
activist-workshop type. In this regard, particular attention in the interpretation
will be a consideration of the second wave of Roma hip hop in the context of the
“burden of representation”, a concept introduced to the humanities by a British
art historian Kobena Mercer in order to explain the artistic work of various
minorities groups and marginalized populations.

„kulture otkazivanja” i mnoga druga.
AB - This paper offers an analysis of the 2021 Netflix mini-series The Chair, a dramedy whose authors sought to give an “authentic” depiction, but also a cul-tural critique, of the functioning of a contemporary US university and US higher education. The series includes four important elements of higher education – the institution of the university, its administration, university staff (professors/lecturers), and the student population; due to the format of the series, however, these elements have not been given equal attention. Furthermore, through the story of a woman of color at a university who suddenly finds herself in the posi-tion of department chair, this six-part mini-series addresses and/or elaborates on a whole set of messages and issues with which the wider audience can identify – an audience interested in questions regarding universities, the humanities, and wider social issues such as gender, race, age and class (in)equalities in academia, and also in western society more generally (particularly in the USA), the prob-lem of a crisis in the humanities, of neoliberalism at universities, the question of political correctness and the phenomenon of so-called cancel culture. The series is viewed both as a text and as a popular culture artifact, that is, as a product that meets certain societal needs (besides the need for mere entertainment), depicts real-life social relationships and transmits certain values, i.e., conveys a certain message. The series can also be seen as an educational text which can acquaint viewers with the purpose, values and people who work in academia, particularly in the humanities. In order to consider its various meanings more comprehen-sively, the series has been analyzed on two levels: the connotative and the deno-tative. The intersection of these two levels of analysis provides a fuller, clearer picture of the importance of the series as a work of pop culture which seeks to offer a cultural critique, and which has elicited a wide range of responses, most-ly from the academic public. The public’s reception is thus viewed as a sort of corrective which seeks to confirm or refute certain messages conveyed by the series and thus provides us with a more complete view of them.

abstract = "U ovom radu je analizirana mini-serija Netfliks produkcije Upravnica (The Chair) iz 2021. godine, dramedija čije su autorke nastojale da ponude „verodostojan” prikaz, a time i kulturnu kritiku, funkcionisanja savremenog američkog univerziteta i visokog obrazovanja. U ovoj seriji se, između ostalog, obrađuju društveno značajne i aktuelne teme poput pitanja rasne, rodne, dobne i klasne (ne)ravnopravnosti u akademskom okruženju i širem društvu, problem krize humanistike, pitanje političke korektnosti i fenomena tzv. „kulture otkazivanja” i mnoga druga. This paper offers an analysis of the 2021 Netflix mini-series The Chair, a dramedy whose authors sought to give an “authentic” depiction, but also a cul-tural critique, of the functioning of a contemporary US university and US higher education. The public’s reception is thus viewed as a sort of corrective which seeks to confirm or refute certain messages conveyed by the series and thus provides us with a more complete view of them.",

AB - This review paper provides an overview of the ten-year long anthropologi-cal research on the cultural identity of guest workers and their descendants as part of the projects implemented by the associates of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade and the SASA Institute of Ethno-graphy. The projects were supported by the Serbian Ethnological and Anthropological So-ciety and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. The phenomenon of “temporary workers abroad”, or the so-called guest workers (Gastarbeiter), which emerged in the early 1960s and continued in the decades to come, has long remained beyond the interest of Serbian anthropological and ethnological science. This is why, after having noticed a scientific research gap related to this phenomenon, in 2010 we initiated the anthropological research of the cultural identity of guest workers. Our intention was to take into account different factors of guest-worker identity construction and to look at the processes, discourses and concepts related to this socio-cultural group from different angles. Over time, as we delved deeper into the problem of migrant workers and migration in general, our interests, and consequently our research, expanded to other topics in addition to cultural identity. In that context, this review paper intends to inform the scientific and professional public about the findings of research on migrants working temporarily abroad and their descendants, and to highlight some of the most important topics that we focused on in this research, while being aware that the phenomenon of migrants and migration is so diverse that it is impossible to include or investigate all its elements that make it so complex.

AB - This paper is the result of work on the project "A Study of Awareness and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage Among Young People in Serbia and the Diaspora" carried out in 2019. In view of the UNESCO recommendations that young people should be educated about the importance of cultural heritage as they are the key population in the process of its further preservation, the project was conceived with the aim of conducting a survey on the awareness of young people in Serbia and the diaspora of elements of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protected in the National Register of ICH of the Republic of Serbia. A target group for the study was selected using the technique of nonprobability sampling, composed of a convenience sample of young people who are members of cultural societies in Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Uzice, Kraljevo and Nis, and also of third-generation Serbian immigrants in Vienna, Paris and Calgary who are members of Serbian cultural societies in these cities. Taking into account the fact that in cultural societies certain elements of ICH are practiced and learned, the hypothesis was that the target group would serve as a good indicator of the degree of awareness of protected elements of ICH on the national list, as most protected elements constitute rare customs. Related to this is the fundamental analytical question, namely, who does the ICH National List serve and who should be aware of the protected rare elements of intangible cultural heritage, to what degree and why. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with open-ended questions, and the data thus collected were consequently supplemented through interviews. Ten elements were selected from the ICH National List. 66 completed questionnaires were collected, 33 from Serbia and 33 from the diaspora. An analysis of the replies suggests that the degree of awareness among young people of ICH is relatively low.

Inbetween the Worlds - Gastarbeiter Novel Taxi Driver of Munich: An Anthropological Analysis

AB - From the perspective of the anthropology of migrations and literature, the paper analyzes The Taxi Driver of Munchen, a novel with autobiographical elements by the Croatian author and gastarbeiter Romano Mrkic. After outlining the basic genre characteristics of "migrant literature" and the so-called gastarbeiter novel, the paper proceeds to analyze the dominant themes and motifs in the novel The Taxi Driver of Munchen. This work, written in the tradition of realist narration, deals with the immediate experience of migranthood and represents a prototype of the first-generation gastarbeiter novel. It is narrated from the perspective of a "guest worker" in Germany - through the character of the protagonist, the taxi driver Marko Mandic, Romano Mrkic writes about himself and his immigrant experience, about important Others and the complex modalities of migrant identity and (non)bclonging. In addition to depicting the everyday experience of the gastarbeiter in Germany and their struggle to integrate into a new and different social environment, and describing the native population's ethnic prejudice and stereotypes in relation to the guest workers, Mrkic speaks from an insider perspective of "Yugo-Germans'" "adversities" of identity. His characters remain perpetually stuck between "two worlds", between "here" and "there", and between the past and the present, while the "myth of return" expressed through an overemphatic nostalgia for the homeland is the foundation of Mrkio's narrative. Through a thematic analysis of the novel, the paper explores the ideas of integration and assimilation of guest workers, as well as the cultural meanings that the author assigns to these processes.

AB - This paper shows preliminary results from an ethnographic study of the modern musical phenomena that gathers "authors from the Serbian scene", who's creations are based on the mixture of the newly composed folk music and turbo-folk, along with various alternative music genres and styles. The research is conducted through the technique of semi-structured interviews with the artists and event organizers, as well as attending different events (concerts, compilation promotion, festivals Zasram and FESRAM), and using written and audiovisual materials that are accessible on the Internet. One of the main aims of this study is to designate the form of "turbotronik" phenomena in the context of music genre and scene, as well as recognizing its local characteristics. Through the analysis of different processes that influence the formatting of a specific music genre (name of the genre, the narrative on genre origin, visual identity, specific sound, the thematic of the songs and characteristics of the genre's public) "turbotronik" is being observed as sort of a "genre in the making".

AB - The subject of this paper is the ethnographic mapping of the origins of the new alternative scene, based on turbo-folk. Mainly located in Belgrade, this alternative scene has been swindling, over the last couple of years, as the circle of artists ('Mangulica FM, Lenhart Tapes, Mega Denke, Gianni Druid, Bombe Devedesetih and others), who freely combine turbo-folk genre with other music forms (electronic music, rap and others) to fulfill modern audience needs. In this research, we will rely on the standpoint that the term "turbo-folk" is not only a tool for music genre's description, but also a value connotated "floating signifier", which pumps its content from the certain community's symbolic repertoire. Turbo-folk showed its symbolic strength in the academic and non-academic discourse, as a tool for cultural switching on/switching off during the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decade of the twenty-first century, when it was instrumentalised as the constitutive otherness of "urban" ("elite", "civilised", "educated", "cosmopolitan") population. The basic assumption of this paper is that the disagreement about classifications, the focus of which is turbo-folk, is rehabilitated, recontextualized and revaluated. In this study, we will re-examine the hypothesis saying that the new alternative scene, which is the subject of this research, endeavours to instrumentalise turbo-folk as an arbor of "urban elite's" cultural critique, its authority and legitimacy of its classification categories.

Migrant Poetry - Anthropological Analysis on the Collection of Poems by Drago Trumbetas

AB - The subject of this paper is a thematic analysis of a bilingual collection of poems by Drago Trumbetas entitled "Poems of guest-workers" ("Gastarbeiter-Gedichte"). The poems in this collection were written during his stay in FR Germany from 1969 to 1980. Drago Trumbetas (1937-2018) was a versatile Croatian self-taught artist and a member of the first wave of Yugoslav economic migrants who went to "temporary" work in the developed countries of Western Europe in the 1960s. During his stay in FR Germany, Trumbetas worked various low paid physical jobs and his artistic expression was strongly imbued with personal migrant experiences. Almost all artistic work of Trumbetas (series of drawings, novels, plays and poetry) is devoted to depicting the life of Yugoslav gastarbeiters. After determining the prevailing topics on the collection of poems, an analysis of their meaning will be undertaken through the anthropological, sociological and historical literature on the phenomenon of "temporary workers abroad". Poetry of Trumbetas has been interpreted in the broader context of the "migrant poetry" development in FR Germany since the 1970s. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing the ways of poetic self-representation of migrant workers, the ways of articulating identity through poetry in a new and different cultural and social environment respectively. The problem of using literary texts written in the first person, which are therefore shaped by the subjective aspirations of individual authors, as relevant sources in ethnological and anthropological studies of migration is problematized in this paper.

AB - The paper analyzes the Serbian feature film „No One’s Child” from 2014. The
film tells the story about a feral child, a fascinating trope found in folklore, literature
and popular culture. In accordance with the anthropological approach to studying feature films, this movie is viewed as modern myth which express and explore key cultural
questions and contradictions in the contemporary society. Through a character of a
feral boy raised by wolfs and therefore without „culture” this paper examines how the
„No One’s Child” film solves the issue of the nature versus culture opposition.

Predstave o profesiji etnolog/antropolog u filmu Ringeraja

AB - The Serbian film Ring a Ring o’ Roses (Ringeraja 2002) represents the data based on which the ideas and cultural notions about ethnology and anthropology in the local context are analyzed. Aside from the analysis of the representation of ethnology as a profession and the context in which it appears, the paper considers the imagining of the character of a fictional ethnologist/anthropologist in the popular imagination. The paper also underlines the similarities and differences between domestic ideas about ethnology/ethnologists and ideas about anthropology/anthropologists in global pop culture. By comparing the imaginary ethnologist/anthropologist and the way in which real ethnologists/anthropologists work, the paper considers the public image of the discipline in the aughts.

Poređenjem imaginarnog etnologa/antropologa i načina rada stvarnih etnologa/antropologa u radu se raspravlja o javnom imidžu discipline nakon dvehiljaditih godina., The Serbian film Ring a Ring o’ Roses (Ringeraja 2002) represents the data based on which the ideas and cultural notions about ethnology and anthropology in the local context are analyzed. By comparing the imaginary ethnologist/anthropologist and the way in which real ethnologists/anthropologists work, the paper considers the public image of the discipline in the aughts., Le film serbe À la ronde, jolie ronde (2002) est le matériau à l’aide duquel

AB - The paper deals with ways of representing love and amorous relationships in post-apocalyptic movies. In these movies, there is a dualism of romantic and partner love, and these two types of love are there to help build a new world, or rebuild the destroyed society. These images of love emphasize the importance of evolutionist theories for the central ideas of these films - in post-apocalyptic scenarios love mostly serves the purpose of having or protecting progeny, it is represented as the key tool and mechanism of survival.

AB - The paper deals with ways of representing sexual relations in movies about the post-apocalypse. Different forms of sexual relations which occur in a post-apocalyptic setting are considered with regard to two types of communities/societies which emerge after the end of the world. These movies indicate how much the idea of an instinctual, natural, biological sexuality is widespread in popular imagination - in the post-apocaypse sex is represented as a motivational force on par with hunger.

U postkataklizmičnoj budućnosti dolazi do radikalne transformacije postojećih političkih, društvenih i kulturnih struktura.
AB - The research subject of this dissertation is comprised of imaginary dystopias of the future presented in movies about the post-apocalypse. The basic trait of these science fiction films is that they display a possible world after a doomsday which occurred due to a global catastrophe. The action takes place in the nearer or farther future and follows the lives of those who survived the end of the world. In the post-cataclysmic future extant political, social and cultural structures are radically transformed. In most films of the (sub)genre the fictional post-apocalyptic world is peopled by relatively small, closed “societies” which are shown as isolated communities which are structurally similar to societies explored by cultural anthropologists in the past, and which were once typical fare for anthropological study. The analysis consists of six case studies – the dissertation considers the meanings of cultural ideas about food, material heritage, urban environments, as well as how social relations in these post-apocalyptic societies are imagined within these films. In accordance with the anthropological approach to studying feature live-action films, movies about the postapocalypse are viewed as contemporary myths which express and explore key cultural contradictions and offer imaginary resolutions to cultural tensions from the Second World War onward. The aim of this dissertation is to show what the anthropological analysis of film narratives on the post-apocalypse can tell us about the society/culture which produced them, about the imagination of the era and about the sociocultural and ideological changes which occurred during the second half of the XX century.

AB - Issue of foreign labour migrants in Serbia does not occupy very prominent place in Serbian governmental policies. These policies are mainly focused towards Serbian Diaspora and Serbian labour migrants working abroad. Conversely, national policies on foreigners in Serbia are mostly concentrated on suppression of illegal immigrants and inclusion and readmission of Serbian refugees. The development of Serbian migratory policies represents part of national Euro-integration strategy. Therefore we find relevant to draw attentions to this topic. In this paper we outline basic national legislation procedures, laws and migratory strategies and give review of basic national and other bodies. Furthermore, we focus on gaps in processing problems of labour migrants in Serbia.

Kao relativno "mlada" poddisciplina antropologije, antropologija medija istovremeno kombinuje tekstualni i kontekstualni/etnografski pristup, nudeći time obuhvatnije uvide u globalnu kulturu današnjice.
AB - This paper provides a chronological overview of the anthropological study of
media with special emphasis on the feature film. It discusses the different theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of mass media with an
overview of the issues and problems anthropologist interested in the field of
mass media were dealing with. As a relatively "young" sub-discipline of
anthropology, anthropology of media at the same time combines textual and
contextual/ethnographic approach, thus offering a comprehensive view of the
global culture of today. The aim of this paper is to determine whether the specific anthropological approach to media exists and what its characteristics are,
in order to indicate the possible benefits of anthropological research of this field in relation to other social sciences and humanities.
