AB - Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an
important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated selfreported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter
hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during
the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported
identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in
public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for
representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained
using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the
pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification
prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic
(r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

AB - Bauman's theory of the attitude of the Western population towards migrants is based on the analysis of several aspects: ontological, ethical, economic, social, political and security. It is a complex theory which is build on his earlier research on fluid life, globalization, and the (post)modernity. In this paper, I will first present Bauman's basic hypotheses about the attitude towards foreigners who are comming "to our door", and then I will apply these hypotheses to the analysis of the situation with the migrant crisis in Serbia. Although Bauman bases his theory on the experiences of Western European countries, I will try to show why his conclusions can be extended to countries on the periphery of world capitalism, such as Serbia. To test some of Bauman's hypotheses, I will analyse public opinion polls in Serbia. Although I did not conduct the research by operationalizing Bauman's theory and therefore I cannot speak of confirming or refuting his assumptions, the analysis of secondary empirical data will serve as our initial orientation and heuristic reconnaissance for some future research in that direction.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the factors which have a predictive value when it comes to the intensive and excessive use of the Internet among adolescents. Predictors tested included different psychological, behavioural, and socio-demographic variables. The data were collected at the end of 2018 within the framework of the international survey EU Kids Online, on a sample of 863 adolescents from Serbia (434 [50%] males) aged 11 to 17 years. It was shown that the intensive use of the Internet was more characteristic among girls, adolescents with a tendency towards antisocial behaviours, those who think to have advanced digital skills and those whose parents did not apply restrictive forms of mediation. On the other hand, the excessive use of the Internet was related to certain psychological variables, like anxiety, impulsivity, and perceived discrimination on various grounds, but also to the absence of active parental mediation and support in the use of digital technologies.

The aim of this study was to determine the factors which have a predictive value when it comes to the intensive and excessive use of the Internet among adolescents. On the other hand, the excessive use of the Internet was related to certain psychological variables, like anxiety, impulsivity, and perceived discrimination on various grounds, but also to the absence of active parental mediation and support in the use of digital technologies.",

Global cultural zones the empirical way: value structure of cultural zones and their relationship with democracy and the communist past

AB - The paper empirically identifies the world’s cultural zones, comprised of the countries with the distinctive patterns of values, and determines their relationship with the country’s communist past and current state of democracy. The analysis is based on the countries’ average values on the two main dimensions of cross-cultural variations: the traditional versus secular-rational and the survival versus self-expression values. The World Values Survey and European Values Study data from 101 countries were used. The K-means method of cluster analysis and the Variance Ration Criterion for determining the final number of clusters were performed. The solution with three clusters appeared as the most appropriate and theoretically meaningful, representing three broad cultural value syndromes. The first value syndrome was defined by low self-expression and high secular-rational values (the zone of secularized authority), the second one by low secular-rational and low self-expression values (the zone of traditional authority), while the third was characterized by high values on both value dimensions (the zone of emancipation). The countries’ cluster membership is highly correlated with the (non-)communist past and the level of socioeconomic development. The countries in three cultural zones significantly differ in terms of the state of democracy: democracy is more fully developed in the countries in the cultural zone of emancipation, and the least developed in the countries with the prevailing traditional authority cultural outlook.

AB - Ideologies are often understood as general principles that connect attitudes towards various political issues into (more or less) coherent belief systems. On the psychological level, ideologies also function as selfcategorizing labels that help placing oneself vis-à-vis political objects, and thereby perform a political orientation function. Yet, doubts have often been expressed about citizens' levels of political interest and sophistication that are deemed necessary for establishing and maintaining the connection between ideological labels and political opinions. This is especially seen as a potential problem in the so-called young democracies. In order to address this problem, the paper analyzes the relationship between ideological self-labeling and political opinion in Serbia. Opinion in question concerns the attitude towards the secession of Kosovo, a southern autonomous province in Serbia.

AB - This paper aims at analysing the relationship between positive and negative party identification and political knowledge, as well as their interplay in regard to electoral turnout. The data from the Serbian 2012 post-election public opinion survey on the nationally representative probability-based sample of voting age citizens were used (N = 1568). The data show that political knowledge is significantly and positively correlated both with positive and negative party identification. Citizens who are more knowledgeable and positively identified are also more likely to vote. However, it is shown that the influence of political knowledge on electoral turnout is moderated only by positive party identification. Political knowledge significantly predicts turnout only in the group of citizens without positive party identification. Being negatively identified with a political party does not modify the relationship between political knowledge and turnout. The results are discussed in terms of the Michigan model of party identification and cognitive mobilisation thesis. The roles of affective and cognitive motivation in electoral participation are additionally stressed and debated.

AB - The paper deals with methodological individualism in sociocultural anthropology. Key theories and debates within the framework of methodological individualism in anthropology are presented in the paper. The authors discuss criticisms aimed at the use of methodological individualism in anthropology as not suitable for anthropology, due to its specificity. Instead, they argue that methodological individualism has advantages for a better understanding of many anthropological topics, especially compared to methodological holism. The authors' assumption is that anthropology is not exclusively a holistic science, as the history of anthropological theory points to an important tradition of methodological individualism. The focus is placed on alternative models of scientific explanation, found in the works of contemporary anthropologists (Holy, Stuchlik), as well as methodological individualists from other disciplines (Boudon), whose conclusions are applicable to anthropology. Methodological individualism does have a significant place in anthropology. There are areas of anthropology that can draw heuristic benefit from epistemological approaches based on the principles of methodological individualism.

Šesto poglavlje sadrži diskusiju o dominantnim konceptima u analizi odnosa političke kulture i političke strukture, kulturalističkog i institucionalnog ili modela racionalnog izbora.

Rezultati analize relevantnih istraživanja ukazuju da nije došlo do ostvarivanja definisanih ciljeva nastave Srpskog jezika, Veronauke i Građanskog vaspitanja u željenoj meri.
AB - The present study deals with the changes brought about by the educational reform since the 2001, which refer to the accomplishment of educational goals in the courses of Serbian language, religious and civic education. The study also included the analysis of the conditions in which the educational changes took place, the resources needed and prevailing social values. The results of the previous relevant studies indicate that the defined goals related to the instruction of Serbian, religious and civic education have not been accomplished in targeted level. The analysis also shows that adequate material and human resources for the reform implementation have not been provided, as well as that the prevailing values do not support the planned development of the education. It is concluded that these difficulties pose the challenges on whose overcoming the future of educational changes depends.

(Post)Materialism, Satisfaction with Democracy and Support for Democracy in Eastern Europe

AB - The materialist-postmaterialist value dimension, understood as assigning priority to self-expression and
quality of life as opposed to physical and economic security, has been one of the most important heuristic
tools in the analysis of the changes of predominant values in cross-cultural and comparative studies in past
decades. In recent elaboration of self-expression and emancipative values (in both cases, with
postmaterialism as the most important component), postmaterialist values have been viewed as an essence
of democratic political culture and a cultural precondition of effective democracy. This study was aimed at
analysing the relation between postmaterialist values (understood as a political - thick culture variable),
satisfaction with country’s democracy (institutional - thin culture variable) and support for democracy. The
data from the European Values Survey (EVS), conducted on the nationally representative samples in twenty
East European countries on the total of twenty countries and 30,393 respondents, were used. It is shown that
postmaterialism is an important aspect of democratic political culture in Eastern Europe; in general, the most
supportive of democracy are postmaterialists. On the other hand, there is a mixed pattern between the
postmaterialist values and satisfaction with democracy – in some countries, citizens satisfied with democracy
are more prone to choose postmaterialist items compared to the dissatisfied ones, while in some other
countries the reverse is true. Both are, however, important predictors of the support for democracy as well as
the country’s level of democracy development (measured by the EIU Democracy index). The relevance of
postmaterialist values for the promotion of democratic political culture in Eastern Europe, possible alternative
mechanisms of value change as well as the materialist-postmaterialist conception are discussed.

Individual and Country Level Determinants of (Post)Materialist Values in Eastern Europe

TY - JOUR

AB - This paper is aimed at analysing the level of postmaterialist values in East European countries as well as the
main individual and country level predictors of the postmaterialist value preference. The data from the World
Values Survey (WVS) and the European Values Survey (EVS), conducted on the nationally representative
samples in the period from 1990 to 2008, were used. The main analysis was performed on the data from the
fourth wave of EVS (2008/2010), on the total of twenty countries and 30,393 respondents. A number of
individual (age, education, income level, size of town, economic hardship in formative years) as well as
country level variables (inflation and unemployment rate, Human Development Index and GINI index values)
were used. The results have shown that the level of postmaterialist values in Eastern Europe, measured by
the standard four-item index, is relatively low and relatively stable in the period 1990–2008. Younger, urban
and more educated respondents as well as the citizens from more developed and economically stable East
European nations are more inclined towards postmaterialism. The significance of the current socio-economic
conditions for the variation in postmaterialism as well as the insignificance of economic security during the
formative period of political maturation calls into question the assumptions of Inglehart’s original model. The
possible alternative mechanisms of value change as well as of the (post)materialist conception are
discussed.

The
possible alternative mechanisms of value change as well as of the (post)materialist conception are
discussed.",

AB - The paper presents a critical overview of recent theories in anthropology, particularly following Ortner's groundbreaking 1984 summary, as well as debates opened up by the Writing Culture symposium and the book that followed (Clifford and Marcus 1986). Beginning with Ortner's theory of practice, the author presents basic elements of several theoretical currents that influenced anthropology's development in the last few decades, with particular emphasis on the use of the concept of culture. Post-1980s years provided for increased visibility of other anthropologies, outside of traditional "centers" of anthropological knowledge (i.e. Anglo-American, French and German anthropologies). Some representatives of these traditions, together with certain modifications of structuralism, aided by representatives of the, deconstruction. movement (especially in France), additionally influenced the self-questioning in contemporary anthropology, leading gradually to what is sometimes referred to the, ontological turn. in contemporary anthropology, exemplified by the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. Representatives of this "turn" also see themselves as successors of the theory of practice. The author points to some serious implications of this "turn" - including pushing anthropology into the realm of pseudo-science, and making it completely irrelevant for understanding and interpretation of the contemporary world.

A particular emphasis is on the situation with published books dealing with the subject in the former Yugoslavia, especially in Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia. The author then briefly reviews the usefulness of specific anthropological books for the teaching of history of anthropology. A recent revised edition of Eriksen and Nielsen's A History of Anthropology is used as the case study of the book on this topic. The paper concludes with several other relatively recent examples that demonstrate how writing history of anthropology combines practical and political aspects.

Intrinsic or Instrumental Support for Democracy in a Post-Communist Society. The Case of Serbia

AB - According to the cultural model of political culture and political change, citizens accept only those political and economic structures compatible with their relatively stable cultural orientations and political values, which are product of a common early socialization. An important implication of this view is that, after several decades of authoritarian rule and a lack of democratic political culture, the support for democracy in ex-communist societies is rather instrumental than intrinsic, based not on values, but perceived system performances in political and economic terms. The rational choice (or institutional) model, on the other hand, posits that these evaluations of system performances are far more than just lip service to democracy; they shape the political attitudes and behaviours and contribute to the (lack of) allegiance to democratic institutions and norms. This paper aims at clarifying the importance of certain “institutional” and “cultural” variables for the general support to democracy in Serbia and their dynamic interplay. The data used in the paper were collected in the post-election survey, conducted after the May 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections on a representative sample of Serbian citizens (N=1,568). The relative importance of several predictors was analyzed: the socio-demographic variables (respondent’s age, educational level, monthly household income), the personality/dispositional variables (authoritarianism), the institutional variables (satisfaction with Serbian democracy and economy, evaluation of government performance before the election, the perceived level of respect for individual freedom and the quality of voters’ view representation in elections) and the cultural variables (political tolerance, nationalism, liberalism, socialist egalitarianism). The most important predictors of support for democracy were satisfaction with Serbian democracy (β=.21, p lt 001) and evaluation of government performance (β=.21, p lt 001); the citizens who were more satisfied with democracy and more inclined to positively evaluate the government performance were more supportive of democracy. The less authoritarian citizens (β=-.11, p lt .01) and those who described their political views as liberal (β=.11, p lt .01) were also more positively oriented towards democracy, proving the relevance of the more general and relatively stable political orientations. The quality of support for democracy in Serbia in intrinsic/instrumental terms was discussed in the concluding part.

AB - Bearing in mind the finding that there is a large number of primary school students at risk of peer violence, this paper attempts to provide an answer to the question of the extent of teachers' sensitivity to such problems encountered by their students. The questionnaire was administered to 95.765 students from the third to the eighth grade in 188 primary schools and 9.141 teachers in the same schools. It has been established that there is a significant but low correlation between teachers' concern about school violence and the risk of violence in the same schools. Teachers are the most sensitive to verbal and physical violence, while the problems caused by other forms of violence are noticed to a lesser extent. A large number of teachers (40%) are of the opinion that school is not facing the problem of violence. Generally speaking, teachers tend to underestimate the risk of violence (both regarding the number of types and the number of students at risk). Teachers who are more dedicated to their profession and whose role demands a larger extent of involvement prove to be more sensitive. Trust in school's power to solve violence problems is correlated with the lower level of concern and consequently with the lower risk of violence among students. The most important implication of these findings is that the programmes that increase sensitivity of all participants in the education system to various forms of violence, especially relational violence, should be continued, as well as that school capacities for solving violence problems should be strengthened.

AB - The paper presents an analysis of the importance of some of the determinants of youth electoral absenteeism, which are in the focus of the predominant explanatory models of electoral participation - socio-demographic, party identification and cognitive model. The relevance of numerous socio-demographic characteristics, party identification, political cynicism, political interest, and political knowledge as predictors of youth electoral absenteeism were analyzed. This research was conducted on a sample of 788 fourth grade secondary school students attending 25 secondary schools in Belgrade. The results indicated that party identification, political interest, organizational membership and mother's level of education were significant predictors of electoral absenteeism. For young persons without party identification the odds of non-voting were 3.6 times higher than the non-voting odds of their counterparts but with party identification. The odds of electoral absenteeism increased with the decreasing level of political interest or organizational membership as well as with the increasing level of mother's level of education. The obtained results were discussed in the context of the proposed explanatory model of electoral participation as well as some previous research findings.

Dobijeni rezultati diskutovani su u kontekstu postuliranih modela izborne participacije, kao i rezultata ranijih istraživanja., The paper presents an analysis of the importance of some of the determinants of youth electoral absenteeism, which are in the focus of the predominant explanatory models of electoral participation - socio-demographic, party identification and cognitive model. The obtained results were discussed in the context of the proposed explanatory model of electoral participation as well as some previous research findings.",

AB - The paper presents an outline of the relationship between anthropology and demography, sometimes depicted as "long, tortured, often ambivalent, and sometimes passionate." Although early anthropologists (primarily British social anthropologists) routinely made use of demographic data, especially in their studies of kinship, the two disciplines gradually drifted away from each other. The re-approachment took place from 1960s, and the last fifteen years saw more intensive cooperation and more insights about possible mutual benefits that could be achieved through combining of methodologies and revision of some theoretical assumptions, primarily through anthropological demography. As summarized by Laura Bernardi and Inge Hutter, "Anthropological demography is a specialty within demography that uses anthropological theory and methods to provide a better understanding of demographic phenomena in current and past populations. Its genesis and ongoing growth lies at the intersection of demography and socio-cultural anthropology and with their efforts to understand population processes: mainly fertility, migration, and mortality. Both disciplines share a common research subject, namely human populations, and they focus on mutually complementary aspects" (2007:541). In the first part of the paper, the author presents some general considerations, like the one that "demography is one of the best understood and predictable parts of human behavior, even if demographers still find themselves unable to predict accurately when parameters will change in interesting ways, such as the 'the baby boom' or the shift to later childbeanng in the 1970s and 1980s North America" (Howell, 1986:219). Nancy Howell also noted the importance of demographic anthropology, because, in her words "if we knew, reliably, the birth and death probability schedules of particular populations, we would know a great deal about their size, age composition, growth rate. And with just a little more information we would know a great deal more such as household and family composition, economic organization, social problems, and something of the political structure. It we knew the schedules for populations in general and could correlate the schedules with the causes, genetic or environmental, that produce them, we would know a great deal about the possible range of human social structure" (Howell, 1986:219). In the second part of the paper, the author discusses several examples of interplay between anthropology and demography. One of them is Patrick Heady's study of the shift in ritual patterns, which combines elements of some "classical" anthropological topics (Mauss's theory of gift exchange and Lévi-Strauss's concept of kinship) with his own field research in the Carnian Alps. "By marrying and raising children, parents participate in a system of gift-exchange in which the gifts in question are human lives, and the parties to the exchange are the kinship groups recognised in the society concerned. Fertility reflects the attitudes of prospective parents to their place in the existing system of reproductive exchange, and the relationships of cooperation and authority which it implies - as well as their confidence in the system's continuing viability. It is shown that this view is compatible with earlier ideas about self-regulating population systems - and that changing economic circumstances are an important source of discrepancy between existing exchange systems and the attitudes and expectations of prospective parents" (Heady, 2007:465). The paper concludes with the discussion of the directions in which relationship between these two disciplines can proceed. Some of the epistemological issues are mentioned, as well as a need to apply different theoretical perspectives to better understand demographic behavior (especially in Europe) and to better understand certain cultural components that shape this behavior. In order to achieve this, most of the scholars whose works are discussed in this paper emphasize "the need for a holistic approach to data collection and the added value of triangulating quantitative and qualitative analyses" (Bernardi, Hutter, 2007:541).
