Životinje u vizantijskim zagonetkama
The animals in the Byzantine riddles
Апстракт
In the Byzantine Empire, the riddles had a long and rich tradition; linguistically two notions were used: ainigma and grifos. They presented lucid and mysterious word play, whose roots went deeply into the past. The Byzantine riddles were a part of the rich ancient Greek literature. Unlike the antique riddles, which were studied in detail, the old Byzantine riddles have not been largely known yet. The riddle presented one of the commonly used, as well as one of the key notions of the medieval symbol theory. Certain animals appeared as the answers in some of the Byzantine riddles. The everyday life of the Byzantine population was linked to some species of domestic and wild animals. Man lived with some animals that provided him with meat, milk, eggs, skin, fur and feathers; he hunted some of the animals and was in certain kind of war with them, since they jeopardized his crops and property. In the collection of the Byzantine riddles, containing two hundred and fourteen metaphoric and per...plexing questions, fourteen animal species were specifically mentioned. These are hawk, sparrow hawk, goat, mouse, pig, ox, shrimp, spider, worm, rooster, snail, weevil, cuttlefish and bee-eater. The most mentioned animal in this collection was rooster (five mentions), then mouse (mentioned three times) and pig (also three times). Snail was mentioned twice, while the other animals were mentioned only once. Besides, four riddles used the species names as the answer: fish twice, and once animals and birds. It is clear that such 'choice' of animals in the Byzantine riddles does not reflect their importance in the everyday life of the Byzantine people. The riddles did not mention animals of great importance for the human kind, such as horses, sheep or dogs, for example. It is obvious that the main criterion for their 'entrance' in the world of riddles were their particular characteristics, especially the strange ones and ones eligible for questions that required the negative answer, as well as their names' adequacy for word play with syllables, letters and numbers.
