Many cognitive and social abilities tend to be distributed along a continuum between patients with schizophrenia
and controls, with unaffected siblings of patients having intermediate values [1,2]. Deficits in overall emotion recognition,
particularly negatively-valenced emotions, have been consistently
reported in schizophrenia. However, studies examining emotion
recognition in siblings discordant for schizophrenia yielded inconsistent results, possibly because there was no adequate control
for the severity of probands’ cognitive impairment.
We hypothesized that siblings of cognitively more impaired
probands would demonstrate poorer facial emotion recognition
in comparison to siblings of cognitively less impaired probands
and controls
