Zaharija Orfelin (1726-1785)

Abstract

Biografija Zaharija Orfelina kao pripadnika prve generacije prosvetitelja u srpskom društvu 18. veka u velikoj meri je rekonstruisana. Pa ipak, širok intelektualni prostor koji je zauzimao u svom vremenu, kao i velika literarna i likovna zaostavština, doprineli su da znatan broj kvalitetnih studija ostane nezapažen, jer su se u međuvremenu izgubile glavne niti-vodilje koje bi razjasnile njegovu intelektualnu, kulturnu i umetničku poziciju. Ovaj rad je usmeren ka pokušaju re/konstrukcije Orfelinove intelektualne biografije, sa pozicija opštih i specifičnih znanja koja su o njemu prikupljena tokom višedecenijskog istraživanja različitih generacija. Orfelinova biografija u radu nije izložena hronološki, već fenomenološki i problemski, dok je njegov opus interpretiran u skladu sa tako zamišljenim biografskim pripovedanjem. Iz te osnove se kreće u dalju kritičku analizu različitih diskursa o njemu i re/konstrukciju njegove intelektualne biografije u različitim životnim razdobljima. Uočavaju se određene filozofske, socijalne, umetničke, društvene i idejne kategorije važne za interpretaciju njegovog intelektualnog profila. Fokus rada je na Orfelinu kao istorijskoj ličnosti, a najveća pažnja je posvećena razumevanju njegove individualnosti i rekonstrukciji njegovog idejnog, mentalnog i u najširem smislu, kulturnog sklopa. Iz tog razloga je analiza njegovih umetničkih dela u radu zastupljena samo u meri potrebnoj da bi se razumela ličnost koja se krije iza njih. Samosvrhovita analiza pojediničnih dela uz pomoć bogate metodologije humanističkih disciplina, predstavljala bi opterećenje kako za čitaoca tako i za sam tekst, pri čemu ne bi doprinosila njegovom kvalitetu. Rad predstavlja intelektualnu biografiju jednog od prvih srpskih prosvećenih intelektualca i umetnika iz 18. veka, sa svim elementima i aparaturom koju takav tip teksta iziskuje.

Although Zaharija Orfelin belonged to the first generation of Serbian men of letters in the 18th century, his biography had to a large extent to be reconstructed. His activities covered a wide intellectual space and he left numerous literary and art works. However, precisely this abundance of different material meant that a significant number of good quality studies of various aspects of his life remained unnoticed, because in the meantime the framework within which one could interpret his intellectual, cultural and artistic activities has been lost. This thesis is an attempt to re/construct Orfelin’s intellectual biography starting from the general and specialised knowledge on Orfelin which has been collected by different generations of researchers over several decades. The biography has been written not in a chronological order, but following phenomena and issues related to his life. The body of his work has also been interpreted in relation to this form of biographical narration. From this basis I have embarked on the further critical analysis of different discourses about Orfelin and on the re/construction of his intellectual biography during different periods of his life. What emerges are ideas and certain philosophical, social, artistic and cultural categories significant for the interpretation of his intellectual profile. The focus of the thesis is on Orfelin as a historical figure, and the greatest attention is given to understanding his individuality and to the reconstruction of his ideas, his psychological and, in the widest sense of the word, cultural identity. For this reason I have analysed his art works only to the extent necessary to understand the person who was behind them. Detailed analysis of individual works using the rich methodology of humanistic disciplines would only have clogged the text and presented a burden for the reader, without contributing to the quality of the argument. The thesis is the intellectual biography of one of the first Serbian man of letters, and contains all the necessary elements and the apparatus which that type of work requires.
