Religious competencies of psychologists who practice psychotherapy in Serbia
Apstrakt
In order for psychotherapists to be competent to work with religious clients, they need to know the religion of their own ethnic group and to be aware of their own religious or spiritual beliefs, then to know the religion of the client if it is different, and also to be able to undertake useful interventions in accordance with that. Problems related to religious issues are very important for some clients. The lack of sensitivity of a psychotherapist for such issues could lead to problems in working with clients and to abreakdown of the therapeutic relationship, especially when the psychotherapist is an atheist or of a different faith, when there is a higher chance of misunderstandings. In this paper various methods for acquiring competences in this field are analysed. The authors also consider the implications of religious incompetence for the psychotherapeutic practice of psychologists in Serbia.
