Abstract
History teaching in Serbia has a clearly identified political role. Paramount is the need to reform history teaching to transform it from a form of indoctrination to a mode of study that develops the knowledge and understanding that educated citizens require. The paper examines a thinking skills approach to history that will equip students with the cognitive tools that they need to be members of the new democratic societies that are emerging from a decade of conflict
