There is a large disagreement regarding Cicero’s phrase cum dignitate
otium. Indeed the interpretations of modern scholars have found little
common ground. The aim of this paper is to study the meanings of
dignitas and otium separately, to describe in outline the main views on
the phrase cum dignitate otium and to give a fresh perspective on the
subject.
