The Collapse of Chalcolithic Societies: What Are We Missing?
The collapse of Chalcolithic societies in the southern Levant has been
captivating the interest of scholars for decades. This paper aims to offer a metallurgical perspective of the issue and explain why the full understanding of this
transition evades archaeological grasp. I propose that mobile communities, possibly pastoral nomads, had a critical role in sustaining Chalcolithic metallurgy and
ritual practices. Changes in their involvement in metallurgy and mobility patterns
likely contributed to the collapse of Chalcolithic societies. The relatively low archaeological visibility of these groups also provides a possible, albeit speculative,
explanation for our lack of resources for fully understanding their role and the
changes that occurred.
