The work of Jeremija Stanojević is a unique example of systematically conducted production, classification and archiving of photographs portraying city ambience in local visual culture of Belgrade between two world wars and a lone attempt to create topographic history of the capital of then Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Using photography, Stanojević “catalogued” public space, formed pictorial lines that form sequenced physiognomy of the face of the city. When observed integrally, his photographs not only provide the insight into the appearance of certain streets and squares (they do not provide only documentary photographic operation), but bring to light a specific space of city experience and its history that is projecting into the present, achieving the effect of Stanojević’s clear historiographic intentions. Having in mind the complex relationship between the photography and (creating image of) modern city history, the text further analyses the photography practice of Jeremija Stanojević a...s a specific form of visual historiographic intervention in the domain of research of Belgrade topography, in which the photography has the role of modern document and material historical resource for the future. Stojanović’s vast archive of photographic images of Belgrade streets has been analyzed as the only systematic and, in the context of the period when it was created, modern study of Belgrade visual and architectural culture, which brings focus to the city experience by using the photography as a precise tool, reliable scientific methodology and ambivalent matrix for reproduction of modern image of history.
