Svedočanstva o Narodnoj odbrani
Testimonies on the 'People’s Defense'
Апстракт
The "People’s Defense", a voluntary patriotic association formed after the Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the autumn of 1908, poses one of the historic issues that the historiography has always had many more questions about than reliable answers. The main reason for this is a lack and insufficient knowledge of historical sources that were partly destroyed during World War I, and partly taken away to Austrian archives. Four documents and one newspaper article, which we are publishing herewith explain how the People’s Defense was formed and present some aspects of its activities - spontaneous founding; the first promoters and founding meetings what happened with documents made over its period of work; the time in which such a mass national organization was founded; fanaticized idealism and devotion of the members; the influence of the People’s Defense on Serbian population outside Serbia and the impression that the Austria-Hungary had been gaining based on that influence, tailor...ing its policy towards Serbia. Written with different perspectives, and the author’s strong personal touch these testimonies nevertheless make a whole that to a certain extent satisfies the professional curiosity related to the historical phenomenon of the People’s Defense.
