Supporting Liberation, Exporting Revolution: The Role of Memory in the Cooperation between SUBNOR and the Third World Veteran and Anti-Colonial Organizations
Abstract
This paper aims to determine the place and usage of memory of the Second World War in the discourse and practices that were a part of the cooperation between the Yugoslav partisan veterans and veteran and anti-colonial organizations from the non-aligned countries. Yugoslav veterans formed a socio-political organization SUBNOR. The sources that will be analyzed are part of the SUBNOR fond in the Archives of Yugoslavia. The archival sources concern both SUBNOR bilateral activities and their activities in the worldwide veteran organizations. We are interested in the reinterpretation of the People's Liberation Movement (PLM), which allowed PLM to fit the narrative of the anti-colonial struggle in Africa and Asia. Furthermore, we want to examine the Yugoslav attempts to influence the modes of remembrance in the newly liberated countries.
