Abstract
The Serbian and Yugoslav historiographies haven't been paying enough a tension to the history of their own vocation for decades. The historical science made merely rare attempts to study itself as a scientific topic. The history of historiography has been completely ignored, while the historians were only dealing wit the empirical knowledge. The questions - such as the social aim of historical science, or its place within human life, the importance of revealing the historical truth and the need of depicting the past "sineira et studio" - were only asked in rare cases. Many written books which are nowadays completely useless from the scientific point of view, as well as the list of topics that historians were persistently avoiding, also testify of how little the Serbian and Yugoslav society knows about itself. Talking about the historiography concerning the 1941-1945 War, one ca notice that it has been developing in several stages that were all influenced by the social conditions under ...which the past was explored and depicted, by the availability of historical sources, the competence of the historians and finally by the sensibility of the whole generation. Looking back at the existing historical production from the last decades, one can notice that it is "full of blanks", but can also claim that "it has passed the long way from statement to knowledge".
