The first post-war years in Yugoslavia were spent in social and cultural gravitation towards the Soviet Union, and it was only in the early 50’s that the “European” model was adopted. That was the period
when the creation of the foundations for future social and cultural development began and the values
that were then recognized and established survived until the collapse of the state. The modernist model,
formed as a transitional, evolutionary hybrid and progressive resistance to socialist realism, over time
became a symbolic sign of socialist democracy as a new, unique political orientation. Cultural manifestations such as large exhibitions of foreign art influenced the construction of the nation’s cultural identity,
but also its international reputation. Henry Moore’s exhibition satisfied the need of the intellectual and
artistic elite for modernist and avant-garde achievements of high art, while on the other hand, Yugoslavia
proved to be a democratic environment, ready to ma...ke up for the artistic and social remnants acquired
during the period of isolation (1941-1951). The outcome of Moore’s visit in the context of Serbian art, as
well as the reception of his work, was undoubtedly significant as a stimulus in the process of emancipation
from the aesthetics of socialist realism, as well as a gradual redirection of the cultural strategy towards
Western modernism, modernism, the principles and values of which were supposed to serve as a basis for
the formation of the post-war generation of local artists.
