The paper deals with the marble façades of the church of Christ the Savior in the
Dečani monastery, the endowment of Serbian king Stefan of Dečani and his son Stefan Dušan
(1327/1328–1334/1335; ill. 1, 2). As it is well known, the masterbuilder of this church was
Fra Vita from Kotor, the city of kings. Although the architecture of the catholicon of Dečani
is very well covered in scientific literature, the characteristic bichrome marble decoration
of the façades, the meaning and the reasons for such a motif did not represent the subject of
previous research. Firstly, the data from historical sources refering to the façade of Dečani are
analysed in the paper; secondly, analogies are given to the motif of alternating marble stripes
present on the façade and its meaning (ill. 3–13); thirdly, given analogies, the role and the
meaning of the marble façades have been examined. It has been suggested that the bichrome
marble decoration of the façades of the Dečani catholicon in a spec...ial way points to Dečani
as the Solomon Temple, the ideal church, the Heavenly Jerusalem
