The paper deals with the iconography and meaning of the motif of three fish
with one head, depicted on a small fragment of the floor mosaic (9 dm2
) of an antique
villa, and found in 1902, in the olive yard of Marko Gregović in Petrovac at Sea (fig.
1). The paper concludes that the presence of this particular motif at the Montenegro
Coast represents the continuation of a long-lasting iconographic tradition (the first
preserved motif of this kind dated to the period of the 18th dynasty, fig. 2). The motif
of three fish with one head was present in Western Europe during the Middle Ages
too (fig. 3). The author concludes that in the case of Petrovac this motif has a Christian background, representing a symbolic image of the Holy Trinity – the Father,
the Son and the Holy Ghost. The head represents the Creator, or the universal Cosmic knowledge on the way of the Creator. The opinion is offered that the head of the
three fish has the same iconography and meaning as the “All-Seeing... Eye of the God”
(fig. 4) and the symbol of the Holy Trinity placed in the Ancient of Days’ hands in
the depiction of Mathias Greuther’s “Aeternitas” (fig. 5). The author expresses the
opinion that the building in which the motif was present once served to the Christian
cult and that the mosaic was done in the second half of the 4th century.
