Theophylact of Ohrid between the Doukai and the Komnenoi

Abstract

The study follows the professional, academic and ecclesiastical career of Theophylact of Ohrid (c. 1050-after 1107, or after 1126), examining it in light of the complex political circumstances at the Byzantine court in the last decades of the 11th century. Subject of two ruling families, Doukai and Komnenoi, Theophylact will adapt his public activity to the current circumstances at court, which were marked by permanent tensions and party struggles of the imperial rivals. The Doukai protégé and courtly tutor of the young prince from this family, Theophylact, with the change in political circumstances and the progressive domination of the Komnenian clan, tries to strengthen his position in the newly created constellation of powers. However, his subsequent elevation to the high-ranking position of head of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, granted by Emperor Alexios Komnenos, will be experienced more as a kind of honorable exile. Forced to replace the affluent lifestyle of the capital with service in a remote province of the central Balkans, the Archbishop of Ohrid tried in vain, through numerous written appeals, to plead for a return to the court. The paper pays particular attention to Theophylact's two laudatory speeches delivered in the Constantinople period, each dedicated to one of the most distinguished representatives of either side: they highlight his dual position as a client, torn between the imperial patrons of two rival families.

Студија прати професионалну, академску и црквену каријеру Теофилакта Охридског (око 1050–после 1107, или после 1126), сагледавајући је у светлу сложених политичких прилика на византијском двору последњих деценија XX века. Као поданик двеју владарских породица, Дука и Комнина, Теофилакт ће своју јавну делатност прилагођавати актуалним приликама на двору, обележеним трајном напетошћу и страначким борбама царских ривала. Испрва штићеник Дука и дворски учених младог принца из ове породице, Теофилакт ће, са измењеним политичким приликама и постепеном превлашћу комнинског геноса, настојати да учврсти своју позицију и у новонасталој ситуацији. Уздизање на високо звање поглавара Охридске архиепископије Теофилакт ће, међутим, доживети као неку врсту часног изгнанства. Приморан да богати живот престонице замени службовањем у удаљеној провинцији централног Балкана, охридски архиепископ безуспешно настоји да бројним писменим апелима издејствује повратак у дворску средину. У раду је посебна пажња посвећена Теофилактовим похвалним беседама насталим у цариградском периоду: у њима долази до изражаја његов двоструки клијентски положај, и извесна растрзаност између царских патрона двеју ривалских породица.
