Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca, c. 4 BC–65 AD), Stoic philosopher, tutor and minister of Emperor Nero and the tragic victim of his imperial protégé, authored a series of popular treatises on Stoic morality (Dialogues, On Clemency, On Benefits, Natural Questions, Moral Letters to Lucilius, etc.), as well as at least some of the ten classical tragedies preserved in a single collection under his name (Corpus Annaeanum). They are: Hercules furens (The Madness of Hercules), Troades (The Trojan Women), Phoenissae (The Phoenician Women), Medea, Phaedra, Oedipus, Agamemnon, Thyestes, Hercules Oetaeus (Hercules on Oeta) and Octavia, the only preserved historical drama of Roman literature, the authorship of which is attributed to some of the younger poets of the same stylistic orientation. These dramatic creations (which, it seems, were not intended to be performed on stage) are characterized by a highly rhetorical language, a tendency towards the widespread use of stylistic figure...s and gnomic pregnancy, as well as a completely simplified psychology of dramatic characters, mostly criminal and pathological, placed in the most famous episodes of Hellenic myth. All these features of Senecan tragedy appear exemplarily in the Roman-style Oedipus which, apart from the title and the traditional narrative, has little in common with the subtle dramaturgy of his superior Hellenic prototype, Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. By shifting the emphasis from the hero's relationship with the otherworldly, embodied in the inscrutable decisions of the Delphic god, to spectacular scenes filled with blood and dark omens (sacrifice, extispicium, necromancy), Seneca turned the well-known classical plot into the bearer of a fundamentally different, Roman and Stoic, concept of tragedy and the tragic.
