Symbolics Of St. Annе Galaktotrophousa In The Church Of The Virgin Of Zahumska In Zaum

One of the peculiarities of the fresco decoration of the church of Virgin Mary in Zaum (14th
century) is a painting ensemble alongside the altar partition. The usual iconographic program,
which includes representations of Christ Φοβερός, the Virgin enthroned with child and the winged
John Baptist Kefaloforos, was enriched by the figure of St. Anne Galaktotrophousa. Undoubtedly,
the iconographic type of of the Mother of Virgin Mary evolved from the same iconographic type
of the Mother of God, while the literary foundations for the creation of the complex dogmatic representation of Ana as the feeder are found in the writings of saint Romanos the Melodist, Andrew
of Crete, Photios I of Constantinople, John Chrysostom, Clement of Alexandria and others. The
gradual introduction of the Galaktotrophousa solution into the iconographic patterns of St. Ana’s
representations, especially from the 12th century onwards, indicated a change in the understanding of the role of the mother of Vir...gin Mary in Byzantium. Most of representations are the ones of
narrative nature, as part of the Virgin Cycle (Peribleptos Monastery, Mystras; church of St. Anne,
Anisaraki, Crete), while the others illustrate the significance of saint Anne’s cult in Christian history (church of St. George, Kurbinovo; Holy Forty Martyrs, Trnovo) or are the consequence of
special devotion (St. Stephen church, Kastoria). On the other hand, the Galaktotrophousa image
in Zaum shapes the idea of the Birth of the Mother of God as the beginning of the redemption
and salvation of the human race, which experienced its full realization through passion of Christ.
In this way, the role of St. Anna in the oeconomy of Salvation is emphasized, and the mother of
Virgin Mary is represented as the bearer of the Incarnation of the Logos.
