Dealing with examples to be found in the National Museum Collection, such as works
from the cycle Misinformation (1972-1979), Intervention (1974-1976) and A Work of Proven Artistic Value (1976) by Radomir Damnjanović Damnjan, as well as Who Profits from Art
(1975) and a map of lithographs entitled From the Artistic Heritage (1976) by Raša Todosijević, this paper focuses on interpreting the meaning of post-media mechanisms and the purpose of the metalinguistic strategies of redefining the notion of the artist/work of art/world
of art within the context of Yugoslav conceptual art, and also in the context of the international networks and relations established with European and American examples of conceptual art, and other contemporaneous post-avant-garde art phenomena. The analysis of
the examples referred to above is based on the understanding of conceptual art as an artistic
practice turning towards discursive self-reflexivity, through which it critically examines and
distances ...itself from visual and formal self-reflexivity, realises itself as an equivalent to the
systems of linguistic signs, and also as a critique of the status of the artist, which, as such, becomes close to what Benjamin Buchloh calls “the aesthetics of administration” and “the critique of institutions”. Damnjanović’s and Todosijević’s approach to the issues relating to the
manner of the functioning of the art system was not aimed at a consequential cognitive-theoretical review of the relationship between art and science, nor was it analytically oriented
towards issues pertaining to the structurally presentable conditions of creating a work of art,
but manifested a tendency towards the rhetorical potential of a text, that is, they “enjoyed”
the uncertainty of meaning and the subversive potential of the multi-semantic nature of a
word/text, the power of language to produce meaning/truth, values, hierarchies, privileged
positions and to normalise them. On the other hand, Damnjanović and Todosijević shared
the conviction, widespread among conceptual (and post-conceptual) artists in the world
and in Yugoslavia, that there was no privileged method or medium of artistic expression,
creation or presentation of art. Objects, collages, drawings, graphic works, texts, pictures,
magazines, artists’ books, actions/exhibitions and installations served as platforms of sorts
or as strategies for critically reviewing the ways in which historical, cultural and ideological
intersections, as well as ideas and beliefs about art and in connection with art, influenced the
coming into being and the reception of a work of art, the formation of the world/system of
art, both the Yugoslav and the international one, this within the framework and the context
of the Cold War artistic geography whose established borders were also the subject/object of
re-examination and transgression.
