Michael Psellos‟ Chronographia is considered a masterpiece of Byzantine literature, and its author has been compared to Shakespeare and Dostoevsky due to his skill in portraying characters. As a contemporary, a witness and a participant of most of the events he described in his history, he is one of the most important sources for the history of Byzantine XIth century, primarily for understending its zeitgeist. Until a few decades ago, Psellos‟ history has been used to extract data on political history, and because of chronological and topographical imprecisions, as well as its focus on characters, rather than facts, and author‟s personal investment in the events described, it was deemed as unreliable and unuseful. In the last few decades, however, Byzantine literature, alongside with Psellos‟ Chronographia, has been freed from the clamps of positivism and has earned its place in the study of Byzantine history...
