Abstract
In this paper patriotism is analyzed from two perspectives: historical-functional, and normative. In difficult times, when the existence of a community is endangered, the basic function of patriotism is seen in one's readiness to sacrifice for community survival. In peaceful times, when a community is safe, sacrificing for the community ceases to be a priority, and civil loyalty to institutions, culture and wellbeing become more important. The former type of patriotism is 'unconditional' and 'traditional', the latter is 'moderate', 'republican', 'constitutional' or 'ethical'. Without the former type there is no Community, as the native place of the Republic. Without the latter there is no Republic, as the native place of freedom and democracy. With globalization and weakening of nation-state's social importance, patriotic feeling weakens, too. The future will show whether the disappearance of patriotism indicates the disappearance of the Republic, and whether the disappearance of the R...epublic indicates the disappearance of democracy. .
