An Early Christian Oil Lamp from the Smederevo Museum in the Form of a Ship with the Representations of Dolphins: A Contribution to the Study of the Light Symbolism in Byzantium

Abstract

The exact relationship between the dolphin motif and objects used for consecration in Byzantine art is not entirely clear and has not yet been the subject of scholarly attention. The purpose of this article is, based on the luxurious decoration of an outstanding bronze alfalfa with images of dolphins from the Smederevo Museum (4th century, Serbia), to point out the significance of this motif and the possibility of interpreting the decoration of the alfalfa and, consequently, the symbolism of light in Byzantine art (Fig. 1 -5). Lucerne, by its characteristics, is a rare and unique example of its kind, both on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula and beyond, throughout the Byzantine Empire and the Christian world. The article interprets it in the context of the Christian cult: in the motifs of dolphins devouring octopuses, fish and other cephalopods, one recognizes the image of the triumph of the king, the complete victory of Christ over Satan, reflecting an allusion to the Resurrection of Christ (Fig. 6).

Точная связь между мотивом дельфина и предметами, используемыми для освящения, в византийском искусстве не совсем ясна и до сих пор не была предметом внимания исследователей. Цель этой статьи состоит в том, чтобы на основании роскошного украшения выдающейся бронзовой люцерны с изображениями дельфинов из Смедеревского музея (IV в., Сербия) указать на значение данного мотива и возможности толкования декорации люцерны и следовательно, символики света в византийском искусстве (рис. 1-5). Люцерна по своим характеристикам представляет собой редкий и уникальный в своем роде образец, как на территории Балканского полуострова, так и за его пределами, на всей территории Византийской империи и христианского мира. В статье она интерпретируется в контексте христианского культа: в мотивах дельфинов, пожирающих осьминогов, рыб и других головоногих моллюсков узнается образ торжества царя, полной победы Христа над Сатаной, отражающей намек на Воскресение Христово (рис. 6).
