AB - This chapter describes changes in family structure and values and associated social tensions in Serbia since the dissolution of the former socialist Yugoslavia three decades ago. The authors address specific characteristics of sociocultural trauma related to civil wars and refugee crises, as well as the possible effects on relational well-being and mental health, including generational and gender differences, trans-generational transmission of trauma, and how past traumatic events are represented and revitalized in the present. The chapter concludes with practical implications for a systemic therapy approach to family adaptation and resilience, negotiating social change while deconstructing and reconstructing trauma-saturated narratives, balancing family cohesion and independence, and moving toward collective coping and healing.

AB - The paper deals with resources available to young parents and the strategies they deploy as a response to various domain-related demands (housing, finance, work, family). First, the structural and cultural features of the social context in Serbia are discussed as the framework for the study. Secondly, the paper analyses young parents’ differences, by socioeconomic status (SES) and gender, regarding their resources, such as housing, finances, and employment, as well as their strategies. The analysis is based on a mixed-methods approach, which brings together the survey results of a sub-sample of 435 parents from a nationally representative survey of young adults aged 18 to 35, and a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with 24 young mothers and fathers. The analyses indicate significant SES and gender differences in young parents’ resources and strategies, which are shaped by the structures and cultures of parenthood specific to the contemporary social context in Serbia.

AB - The paper is based on the analysis of narratives from the case studies of two young single mothers from the longitudinal qualitative research in Belgrade. The aims of the paper are exploration and interpretation of the positioning and meaning of motherhood within social biographies of the working-class single mothers. The intention is to study experience of single motherhood among young women with lower social-economic status by exploring how it is contextualised within structural, normative and institutional frameworks, as well as within relational and biographical contexts. The analysis proved the assumption that, although the position of motherhood within their life courses is similar, its meaning within their social biographies is different due to their different experience and subjectivities. In the concluding discussion, I argue for taking into account feelings as part of maternal experience, as well as to interpret agency as embedded in relational and biographical contexts within a young woman's social biography.

AB - The paper deals with several most significant issues concerning advantages and problems of applying longitudinal qualitative research in practice. Following the introductory part that presents basic features and particularities of longitudinal qualitative research, there are three sections presenting research dilemmas and solutions related to research design, research implementation, and analysis and interpretation of findings. Discussion refers to recent methodological literature, as well as the author's own research practice of doing longitudinal qualitative research in four waves from 1993 to 2014. The topics that are highlighted include: flexibility of research design, adaptation of concepts and interpretation to changes during the research, research ethics and respondents' and researcher's reflexivity, analyzing and interpreting change within social biography approach. The concluding discussion summarizes heuristic and methodological advantages of longitudinal qualitative research for social biography approach, such as contextualization and biographization of findings, but also its limits and possibilities of overcoming them based on the author's research experience.

AB - The article is based on the longitudinal qualitative research (LQR) with 20 young people from the two social strata in two urban neighbourhoods of Belgrade carried out in four waves from 1993 to 2014. It deals with interpretation of changes in agency within social biographies through analysis of the narratives from two biographies. Its aim is exploration of agency as a response to changing contexts, and of its biographization-the interpretation of how the young people relate their agency to their identity and subjectivity. The last goal of the article is to discuss the advantage of LQR for exploring and interpreting changing agency. It is argued that interpretation of contextualization and biographization of agency contributes to its understanding as embedded into changing contexts within the social biography. It points that LQR provides invaluable methodological approach for understanding the complexity of interrelations of contexts, agency and meanings in time perspective.

AB - The aim of the paper is to point at the sources of ideologization of concept of family through presenting its definition and use in modern social, mainly sociological, thought in XIX and XX century. The analysis has been done through contextualization - interpretation of family concept definition within frameworks of various sociological theories that are embedded within socio-historical contexts of their emergence. The first part of the paper deals with main obstacles for conceptualization and exploration of family life. Analysis of sociological theories showed that both definition of family and the attitude towards modern family are in function of central theoretical proposition of the approach, whether it is set as social system integration or emancipation of an individual. Sociological studies are also burdened with normativism, since scholars view modern family as an ideological construct of, success story", both from the standpoint of its apology or criticism, therefore neglecting reality of family life in its variety. In the concluding part, I raise the questions of possibility and a mode of comprehending and exploring particularly contemporary family without a burden of its ideologization.

Elements of life satisfaction among young adults in Serbia

AB - Contemporary sociological studies argue that employment and personal life have diversified effects as determinants of life satisfaction (LS) of young adults. We have, therefore, decided to explore the three different aspects of general LS, satisfaction with personal (intimate) domain, satisfaction with family life and satisfaction with occupation (professional domain), by using the survey data on 1627 young adults aged from 19 to 35 from Serbia. The correlations between the three domains are significant, while the strongest tie is between satisfaction with intimate relations and satisfaction with family life. The analysis exposed that social variables (employment, education, housing autonomy and financial autonomy) and personal variables (partnership and parenthood) are in a diverse manner related to the three domains of LS, as well as that their effects are different for young men and women. Taking into account particularities of social context in Serbia, we have introduced functional autonomy (decision-making and acting independent of parents) as mediating variable. The results uncover that functional autonomy has little influence on satisfaction with occupation, while social variables have a strong effect, suggesting that agency in professional domain is significantly socially bound. Regression models reveal divergent and gender-specific relations of variables and three aspects of LS related to particular structural and cultural context in Serbia that sets limits to gender detraditionalization.

AB - The article deals with the formation of the social biographies of young people through the interplay of structure and agency. The aim is to provide a grounded typology of patterns of young people's agency within the process of shaping social biographies. The structural context addressed in the article consists of family resources and habitus. The evidence comes from a longitudinal qualitative study with young people from families of workers and families of professionals in two urban neighbourhoods in Belgrade. The narrative analysis of young people's agency that combines longitudinal biographical data and lifelines accounts comes from case studies from the last wave of research. Several patterns of young people's agency that have emerged are explored as related to structural opportunities/constraints, and family habitus. It is argued that family resources and support are mechanisms by which social inequality in Serbian society is reproduced during transition to adulthood. On the other hand, young people as strategic actors develop and exhibit different types of agency within the structural contexts of family resources and habitus.

AB - The paper deals with transition to adulthood of young people in Serbia through analysis of findings of the two surveys from 2003 and 2011. The aims are to explore the changes in pace, as well as in transitional trajectories that could indicate their destandardisation and individualisation. Some of the debatable issues related to the transition to adulthood approach are presented in the framework and discussed further in relation to the results of the analysis in the concluding section. The findings indicate that there exists some acceleration in the pace of transition, mainly due to increased financial independence of young people. The trajectories, however, are still standardised, while transition is postponed and prolonged. The comparative analyses of some features of young people’s transitions to adulthood in the Balkans led to the conclusion that an alternative conceptualization is needed.

AB - The paper explores the spatial aspects of social capital. In the first part of the paper we provide an overview of the space dimension in relevant theories of social capital. Three approaches to social capital are included: key theories (Bourdieu, Coleman, Putnam), economic/development theories and network theories. Differences among the authors with regard to spatial dimensions are based on different conceptualizations of social capital. The second part of the paper is an in-depth comparative analysis of spatial dynamics of social capital in theory, research and public policy. The main goal of this part of the paper is to examine three spatial dimensions of social capital: spatial framework, space distance and mobility of social agents. The research-based results indicate that space does not have the same effect on different social agents and that some types of social capital are more determined by space dimensions. The last chapter focuses on the public policy conceptualizion of social capital and space. The space-based manipulation of social capital in public policy reflects the long-lasting political tendency to modify sociability through the manipulation of spatial factors. The programs of social urbanism are based on the local community as the optimal spatial framework for social capital development.

AB - The aim of this paper is to explore the significance and meaning given to family transitions: independence from the family of origin, partner relationships, marriage, and parenthood, during the transition to adulthood made by young people in Serbia. After discussing the theoretical issues related to family transitions within a life-course and individualization thesis perspectives, we perform our exploration by interpreting both quantitative and qualitative data related to the practice and normative models of transition to adulthood. We further discuss and explore the centrality of family transitions on a comparative level within the Balkan region. There is a contradiction within family formation trends between their demographic and ideational and relational levels in the region. There is also a crucial difference between the significance of family transitions (which is a common feature) and its diversified meaning. We conclude that various social contexts, the structural and cultural factors that influence family formation call for an alternative conceptualization of young people's transitions to adulthood.

Children's and parents' perspectives on risks and safety in three Belgrade neighbourhoods

AB - The article examines children's and parents' perspectives on risks and safety in the neighbourhood in the context of Serbian society undergoing turbulent transformation. The evidence for the analysis comes from a small-scale survey with parents and 13-14-year-old schoolchildren and eight group interviews with the children in three Belgrade urban settings. The data show that the main difference between children's and parents' perspective is situated along the axis general risks in broader society vs. particular knowledge of risks and coping strategies embedded in the neighbourhoods. Such difference is related to different social positions of adults and children but is also significantly marked by specific social context. Bearing in mind recent brutalisation of Serbian society, risk anxiety in general is lower than might be expected. Due to weak institutions parents still rely considerably on social safety nets within the neighbourhoods. Their practices are generally more instructive than restrictive, thus implicitly supporting the practices through which children exercise significant agency in using places. Different spatial characteristics of the studied neighbourhoods emerged as an important contextual variable in both children's and parents' perspective on risks. The under-urbanised suburban locations are perceived as more risky, contrary to experience in the West.

Porodice i socijalni kapital u Srbiji - neka pitanja istraživanja i praktične politike

AB - Based on several recent studies on families and households in Serbia, the paper examines the heuristic and methodological validity of the concept of social capital as applied in studying families in post-socialist transformation. After discussing conceptual issues and problems related to social capital and study of contemporary families, the findings from the studies related to social capital are summarized. It is argued that in a post socialist society in transformation, such as Serbia, there are two sides to social capital, that consequences of strong "bonding" social capital are twofold, and that this has complex effects on different societal levels. In the concluding part, some methodological and policy issues that emerged from the evidence are pointed out.

U zaključnom delu se ukazuje na neka metodološka i pitanja socijalne politike koja su se otvorila u analizi., Based on several recent studies on families and households in Serbia, the paper examines the heuristic and methodological validity of the concept of social capital as applied in studying families in post-socialist transformation. In the concluding part, some methodological and policy issues that emerged from the evidence are pointed out.",

The transition of young people in a transitional society: The case of Serbia

AB - The paper is based on a multidimensional comprehensive survey of 3180 young people aged 17-35 from Serbia in June 2003. It examines the process of becoming an adult in a transitional society undergoing profound social crisis. The paper focuses on different aspects of transition, notably on family transition. The 'structured individualisation hypothesis was tested in several dimensions: the pace at which independence is gained, the milestones of transition, resources available and norms related to the process. The findings show that the individualisation process is hindered by a combination of structural and cultural factors. The structural constraints are related to the lack of resources stemming from unemployment and housing problem. The cultural constraints stem from paternalistic family relations related to infantilisation and retraditionalisation in the family domain. Young people use the only strategy available in the process of transition: they postpone the key life events that would normally bring them to adulthood. The basics of individualisation - becoming independent from their families of origin - occurs approximately 10 years later among young people in Serbia than is the case among their peers in most Western European societies.

AB - U radu se razmatraju stavovi o odrastanju među mladima u Srbiji.
AB - The aim of this paper is to explore the attitudes on transition to adulthood among young people in Serbia. The empirical basis of our analysis was a multidimensional study carried out by an interdisciplinary team of experts and organized by the Center for Policy Studies from Belgrade. After outlining the analytical framework for youth transition on the normative level, we intend to analyze the attitudes of young people concerning adulthood with special reference to family transitions: independence from the family of origin, partner relationships, marriage, parenthood, as well as perceptions of their agency in transition to adulthood. In the concluding part, we will interpret the findings by comparison with the trends outlined in studies of young people from some Western and post-socialist countries in the region.

AB - The article is based on a longitudinal qualitative study carried out by the author on children and their families in two areas of Belgrade (Serbia) in 1993-4 and 2000. Its goal is to provide an insight F into how everyday life is structured and constructed for children by their family habitus. There are significant distinctions in how families from different social strata use their resources and thereby provide different cultural contexts for children. The main conclusion is that family habitus has a strong influence on allocation, distribution and the use of family resources and thereby structures the everyday life of children. At the same time, it activates different kinds of capital for (and by) children and thereby constructs different: childhood practices.

AB - The paper aims at questioning some theoretical and methodological issues of relevance of social capital concept for children and its policy implications. The evidence for the analysis comes from the small-scale survey and eight focus group interviews with 13 - 14 year old schoolchildren in three Belgrade urban settings. By using the operationalisation developed by V. Morrow (2003), the author explores the validity in the case of children of social networks, sense of belonging and local identity community, and civic engagement as features and components of social capital. The evidence shows that each of these features has its particularity when children and young people are concerned, which has to be kept in mind when using social capital as theoretical concept and methodological tool. The validity of the concept of social capital in its broader terms for children is questioned in the paper. Considering different kinds of social constraints, one could ask whether it would be more helpful to think about the defined components as "social resources" than as "capital" when we consider children as a social group. This argument has also specific policy implications.

AB - The objective of the article is to present the main problems and disputes within the history of childhood. The main principles of interpretation of childhood as a social construction are established in the introductory part of the article. It is followed by the main analysis which is divided into two parts. The first part is on the problem of historical contextuality of the modern idea of childhood in Western societies. The analysis of the main contributions to the problem shows the major agreement on the thesis that the modern idea of childhood is the product of modernity and the development of 'bourgeois ethos' within the family. The second part deals with more problematic question of actual practices of childhood in the past. According to the author, main disputes in the area come from misunderstanding of relations between the idea and the practice of childhood and from oversimplified explanations of the processes of change, with neglecting of the complexity of social factors involved, which produces the bias of ideologization of social reality. In the concluding part, the author gives some solutions to avoiding the mentioned problems of oversimplification and ideologization: making of analytical distinction between the idea and the practice of childhood; involving of a matrix of social factors in the interpretation of the childhood; the analysis of the middle (group) level as a mediator between normative reality and actual practice of childhood in everyday life of the family. The author concludes with an opinion that we should speak of childhoods (in plural) as a product of specific social conditions and different strategies of social reproduction within the family.
