AB - Understanding the nature of copying errors in the cultural transmission of material culture is highly relevant for students of cultural evolution, especially in the field of evolutionary archaeology. In this paper, we set up a classic transmission chain experiment, which involves making clay anthropomorphic figurines, to explore the nature of the copying error related to the production of 3D objects. The experiment consists of four independent transmission chains, each with 10 participants. Three chains are non-expert chains, as they consist of students of archaeology and psychology with no formal training in arts. The fourth is an expert chain consisting of art students. Our results show that the copying error predictably differs between the experts and the non-experts – it is lower in the expert chain. However, in both groups, the error is higher than predicted by the models that assume that the copying error is only due to imperfections in the perception of linear dimensions. Taken together, these two results suggest that, in addition to the error in perception, the error in the execution contributes significantly to the overall error, as predicted by the recently formulated object-mediated transmission model (Crema et al., 2023). The results of our experiment also show that the errors are often biased rather than random, suggesting that the transmission process involves the transformations anticipated by the cultural attraction theory.

AB - The lithics are by far the most common class of material culture on the Paleolithic sites. Since
the 19th century, researchers have developed different approaches for comprehending the variability
of stone tools in time and space and generating insights about the past based on lithic remains. But,
despite long research history and several approaches, large-scale assemblage comparisons remain
largely subjective, descriptive, and vague.
One approach that enables large-scale comparison is developed by G. Tostevin to study
cultural transmission in the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transitional period (Tostevin, 2012). This
method is based on reduction sequences according to the behavior approach- the flintknapper’s
behaviors and decisions made during the process. Two behavior sets are recognized: technological
behavior- blanks production and the curated behavior- retouched tool kit production. Quantifying
those behaviors through attribute analysis based on knapping experiments, Tostevin combined
qualitative technological insights with different statistical tools to make a quantitative, more formal
assessment of the similarity of pairs of assemblages.
Even if Tostevin’s approach was an improvement over qualitative methods when many sites
were analyzed, several issues could improve aspects of this method. This study suggests several
modifications of method to improve validity, applicability/repeatability, and interpretability. By
applying the modified version of Tostevin's approach, we show how it can be used as a general method
for conducting large-scale technological comparisons.

AB - Archaeologists commonly use subjective classifications to group ceramic vessels into different classes, but the usefulness of such tools for creating narratives about the past is seldom questioned. After noticing that certain ceramic classes from the Bronze Age necropolis of Mokrin have quite similar shape and size, we decided to undertake a morphometric analysis of vessels from this site. We show that some traditional classes largely overlap in both shape and size, and that the majority of funerary ceramics from Mokrin can be classified into two main morphological classes of vessels: (1) bowls; and (2) one- or two-handled beakers and amphorae. Our results go beyond this study, as they show how quantitative methods can be used in a complementary manner with more traditional tools to gain meaning full knowledge about the past

AB - The usual answer to the age–old question of "why do we need archaeology today" often sounds like "because in order to tackle the modern problems, we need to understand the way past societies dealt with them". The project ARCHAEOWILD, funded by the Science Fund of Republic of Serbia, tries to understand the Holocene history of the Human – Wildlife conflict and coexistence. This will provide modern conservation and wildlife management experts with an elaborate overview of the spatial and temporal distribution of wild animals and plants in the Central Balkans from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages. Our goal is to use a large amount of biomolecular data, including aDNA and C/N stable isotopes, to provide a new understanding of the paleoecology of wild animals that were frequently hunted during the Holocene period, such as red deer and brown bear. We will also investigate the reasons behind the regional disappearance of globally extinct mammals such as the aurochs and European wild ass, while also examining the origins of exotic wildlife, such as fallow deer and leopards.
On the other hand, another important question has been popping up regularly in the last couple of years. “Why do we need archaeologists”, which especially targets the younger generations on the verge of their academic careers. Universities have started shutting down archaeology departments, leaving fewer options for the newly graduates, who end up searching for a career change. Again, projects such as ARCHAEOWILD can be a good example of dealing with this type of issue, since six out of eight people employed were post–graduate students at the start of the project, while for the three of them this was their first job in the field.

AB - The site of Vinĉa-Belo brdo has a rich stratigraphy with layers from different periods, but the long and continuous Late Neolithic occupation of the site and its rich material evidence have attracted particular attention of archaeologists from its discovery. The site has been studied for more than a century by many researchers who generated knowledge about different aspects of this settlement, while it also had a central place in general discussions about the Late Neolithic of the Central Balkans (~5300~4500 cal BC). During the long research history of the site, a wide variety of theoretical and methodological tools has been applied to the material culture, but the research within the cultural-historical framework has been particularly influential as it had laid some foundations of knowledge about the period, which influence the current research. However, knowledge production within the culture-historical framework relied on theoretical and methodological concepts which are now largely abandoned. Concerning the long-term socio-cultural dynamics, the subjective and unsystematic typologies, conducted on a selection of finds, were often interpreted in terms of simplistic explanations related mainly to concepts such as ethnicity, migrations, and social norms. The goal of this research is to re-evaluate certain cultural-historical interpretations of long-term cultural dynamics and offer a new perspective on this issue using novel tools and concepts. The long-term cultural dynamics were observed by a detailed analysis of anthropomorphic figurines and lithics, and interpreted in the light of cultural transmission theory. The three main research aims of this study were to – assess the character of cultural changes, explore the relationship between demography and cultural diversity, and reconstruct the models of cultural transmission. The results indicated that, contrary to frequently stated assumptions, there are no sudden cultural changes on the site, and that all cultural dynamics can be explained by the continuous, uninterrupted transmission of cultural knowledge about artifact production. Cultural changes continually appear throughout the sequence, indicating that the periodizations based on the Belo brdo sequence are arbitrary units for dividing the temporal variability of material culture. In such a scenario of continuous social reproduction, the social learning strategies were the main drivers in producing the observed stabilities and changes in the material culture, while the influence of demography on cultural dynamics is less clearly evident, although it might explain some of the observed patterns. The reconstructed models of cultural transmission (conformist, neutral, anti-conformist) indicate that the knowledge about the production of these artifact classes was partly collective, shared on the level of community, and partly individual, where a person could acquire it from any member of the community or innovate, but more research is needed to further narrow down the range of possible socio-cultural scenarios. The implications of certain conclusions go beyond this study, as they show how new tools and concepts can question some foundations of knowledge about the past and change our view about the possible scenarios of the past.
Implikacije odreĊenih zakljuĉaka prevazilaze okvire ove studije, jer pokazuju kako savremeni pristupi i koncepti mogu dovesti u pitanje odreĊene temelje saznanja o prošlosti i promeniti našu sliku o mogućim scenarijima prošlosti.

AB - The project ARCHAEOWILD, funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, investigates the Holocene history of human-wildlife interactions within one of European biodiversity hotspots, the Central Balkans. By incorporating data of archaeozoology and archaeobotany, aDNA and stable isotopes, ancient texts, and iconography, the project will give a diachronic insight into wildlife biogeography, large mammals extinction dynamics, anthropogenic pressure on the environment, and symbolic aspects of HWI in the region. Through the medium of a short movie, project members will present a research framework of the project with the emphasis on its impacts relevant to contemporary biodiversity issues.

AB - An important aspect of prismatic blade production is the choice of a knapping technique. This study tests the utility of elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) for discriminating between different knapping techniques and offers a new perspective on blade variability. Our results indicate that there is an overlap in the outline shape and symmetry of individual blades produced by direct percussion, indirect percussion, and pressure debitage. Nevertheless, the EFA points out certain group-level differences regarding the shape and regularity of blade outlines and yields classification accuracy which is comparable to the previously proposed quantitative approaches for distinguishing blades produced by different knapping techniques. However, a more detailed analysis of technique-related factors shows that the emerging variability of blade outlines is more complex and that tripartite division might not always be suitable for reconstructing the past knapping behavior. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this method, and how it could complement the standard technological analysis in exploring and explaining blade variability.

AB - During the last decade, systematic surveys for Palaeolithic open-air sites in different regions of Serbia revealed a large number of finds, predominantly lithics. Analyses of collected materials greatly contributed to the study of the Palaeolithic in the area. Finds tentatively attributed to the Lower Palaeolithic could be of great importance considering the scarcity of finds from this period in the Balkans. However, the anthropogenic character of finds was uncertain for the material collected in the vicinity of primary and secondary raw material sources. It was suspected that artefacts and geofacts could be mixed in these localities. The issue of attribution of finds and collections to artefacts or geofacts can be traced back to the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and the Eolithic controversy. Since then, various approaches have been put forward for distinguishing naturally and culturally produced material. In order to test the hypothesis that artefacts and geofacts are mixed in the vicinity of raw material sources, we used Peacock's test for general attributes of flakes, and applied it to the material gathered on three sites in the vicinity of Vrnjačka Banja: Crnobarac-Ruđinci, Dublje-Nišan, Štulac-Slatinski Potok. Our analysis included only chert finds, as the question of attribution was studied primarily on this raw material. Eight attributes were analyzed on possible flakes from these locations and, based on them, composite scores were calculated for each find. Results indicate that most finds in the studied collections have low scores, similar to other published geofact collections (e.g. Kirminghton and eoliths from Peacock 1991). We compared our results with known collections of artefacts and geofacts from Peacock's study, using descriptive statistics, One-Way ANOVA test, line diagram, and box-plot. Our results indicate that geofacts predominate in all the studied collections. Therefore, we argue that caution is needed when interpreting surface collections, especially those collected in the vicinity of raw material sources.
